PTY Terminal 2: Oct 2018

Says it will be completed about a year from now.

20 new gates.

I felt the construction shot up initially, then the election and change of parties, now it seems to be inching along. And still a big decision on getting a branch of the Metro there.

So January 2019 will be the actual opening?

Or neither. It could well be that PTY incurs a small additional delay. Such are things in Panama. However, BER will definitely not open so "quickly".

I think Oct 2018 is optimistic.

Don't hold your breath! I was just there and I was told 'No Trabajo' - someone higher up is waiting for huge payoff before the work will start back again! I am thinking completion 2020 now.

The PTY airport expansion has been a huge story in Panama. The expansion just suddenly went on hold out of the blue, with no explanation?

I was there over the weekend, fat chance for April 2019 - LMAO! More like April 2020. No visible progress has been made since I was there in June 2018.

The new terminal hosted its inaugural flight today. Five gates are open, apparently only as a temporary measure to respond to the Papal visit/World Youth Festival. But bodes well for an April opening..... or not.

Llega el primer vuelo a la Terminal 2 del Aeropuerto de Tocumen

I assume Varela will want to cut a formal and official ribbon before the elections in May, so let's see.

Changing Gate Numbers

New terminal will open officially on Friday 26 April 2019. They are changing the gate numbering to 3 digits to easily indicate the terminal.

Terminal 1 will include gates ranging from 101 to 147, while Terminal 2 will have gates 201 through 225.

They (Copa or Tocumen Airport itself) still have no map put up with the new terminal layout!

I will be there Thursday-Sunday, but do not think that any of my flights leave from T2

Calling T2 "open" is quite the exaggeration. They simply are using the first 7 gates. Some restrooms are open, but absolutely no other services. The terminal does look nice--what one can see of it.

Also, the gate numbers are completely renumbered, including the old terminal. They did not simply slap on a 1 in front of the previous gate numbers.
