It's against the rules. It's not right but it happens and happens often. Citing the Star Alliance rules does no good. YMMV

As a BD*G, have you tried? I've had no problem at PHL or CLT when using my BD*G to access the lounges on trips from there to foreign countries in the Americas.

Did I read the award chart correctly??? Did Cairns (formerly in Oceania, now in Australia region) just jump from 60K miles to 120K miles (both on award saver rates!) if wanting to go to mainland USA on CO via GUM??? ...?!? So now it's less miles to travel ex SYD to North America at 80K miles on AC/NZ/UA.

I haven't flown on US since becoming BD*gold--at the time of my experiences I was just UA *gold. I assume ;) that that it would be no problem on any Star itin...intl or otherwise with BD*gold. With BD*gold, the rules are so simple that even a US lounge dragon wouldn't have problems.

The problem is being a USA-based program and the US lounges flying to Canada/Mex/Caribbean. US claims that only transoceanic intl gets lounge access with US/UA *Gold.

Yeah, always PHX, who is well aware of the nuance. Either that, or it's a US East vs. US West thing. ;)

Everyone bashes US, and here I am, able to get into their lounges as advertised, without major headaches, and the US West folks even op-upped me a number of times as UA*G. In fact, last year, my US op-up rate (when not entitled to any upgrades whatsoever) was about equal to my 33% CO EUA rate as CO Platinum.

Not true. In the wild world of US they don't consider Canada, Caribbean, or Mexico to be international in terms of lounge access. For their own members, UA members or anyone else.

If anyone got in it was either because of a lazy agent or they showed an international star alliance card and the agent just assumed you were on an int'l trip, which would grant you access.

East. West. It's all the same cr:rolleyes:ptastic carrier (with the same cr:rolleyes:ptastic lounges). At least the ones on the East kinda/sorta look like they once were nice places.

If you read their documentation on the UA page at the Club, UA*G are clearly admitted on these itins.

It's only US *G they're supposed to deny. All other *G can get in.

If you've been denied, the agent doesn't know the rules.

It's only becuase of the UA hook-up that they're changing course here. If anything, you should probably thank UA for setting them straight on this one.

Sorry channa, I have been only flying CO for two years and while I was aware of the policy when I started flying CO, I am thrilled that it's been re-instated. I don't care who made who change it, I am just happy that us high rev, low fare code flyers in the east are going to be able to reap the benefits better of purchasing a ticket on Continental rather than purchasing it solely on co.com. Paying 30 cents a mile for a barbie jet ride along the east coast that was in L class really chapped my a$$ only getting half credit when booking through another mandatory channel other than co.com

I completely agree that these changes are positive and are the right move for CO. They're entering into a JV with UA and LH, and need to be open to customers buying tickets from various channels or airlines, instead of their previous protectionist policies.

My response was to a poster who was specifically thanking CO for the changes, when if left alone, it's very clear CO didn't want to do this (or at least the old CO regime didn't want to).

At least you can earn those miles into your UA account!

This is huge. I never understood it anyway. A ticket sold is a ticket sold. What was the advantage to Continental by forcing you to buy it at their website?

Other outlets (travel agents, Orbitz, etc.) take a cut.

This is a very strong program.
Being two round trips Asia/US per year, I can typically make to Gold and not 100% sure on Platinum.

It does give lounge benefits for mid-tier.

My big question. How does the stopover and open jaw rule for the award? especially intra-asia? those would be the key for whether i will switch all my business to *A (CO) in the future. I dont like UA because of starnet blocking.

Thanks.

Read the following to get better informed about what *Gs -- excepting US/UA *Gs -- are currently entitled to in terms of departure lounge access even on domestic only Star Alliance flights:

Star Alliance Gold Customers Travelling in Any Class: Customers have access to any Star Alliance member carriers' owned lounges with the Star Alliance Gold logo at the entrance.

*Customer must present a valid frequent flyer programme Star Alliance Gold level card

*Customer must also present a boarding card for a same day Star Alliance flight departing from the local airport

*Customer is entitled to one guest

*United and US Airways Star Alliance Gold customers may only access the Red Carpet Club and US Airways Clubs within the U.S. when travelling in conjunction with a Star Alliance international flight.
http://www.staralliance.com/en/trave...ss-policy.html

I am counting on that last item above being changed to something like the following:

"*Continental, United and US Airways Star Alliance Gold customers may only access the CO PC, UA Red Carpet Club and US Airways Clubs within the U.S. when travelling in conjunction with a Star Alliance international flight."

The policy will remain that most Star Alliance carriers' *Gs (excepting CO/UA/US *Gs) will get access to the * Alliance carrier's lounges even when traveling only domestically on * airlines.

Blantantly incorrect, as least in regard to travel agents. CO prefers website bookings due to the booking fee that the GDS charges to have the flight listed. I can look up a flight on CO.com and see the same flight in a GDS, but buying via a GDS typically results in $5 less ending up in the airline's pocket.
