Options for orphaned CO miles
Hi there. I am gold on AA. I have 100,000 NW/DL miles (once they combine later this year, almost all are on DL). Until last month, I hadn't flown CO since July 2001.
I had a job interview last month with an employer in a CO hub. They bought a B fare class ticket. I felt really good about my job chances and really wanted it so rather than credit the miles to DL or NW, I created a new CO account and credited the miles there thinking I'd get extra points etc. Counting on getting the job and relocating, I was hoping to either get a status match or fly enough to get status on CO and figured that would be a good start. Well, my interview went great as I had expected/hoped and they were ready to make me an offer. But now the economy hasn't improved as they had expected and the job may be eliminated or at least it won't be filled anytime soon I just learned. Is it too late to transfer the miles to DL or NW? What else can I do with them, assuming this job doesn't come through? We're talking less than 2,000 miles so I figure my options are limited but thought I'd ask the experts. Can I transfer to a hotel program and what's the fee? I'm assuming I'll just lose them eventually but before accepting that fate I thought I'd check with the experts. I knew I was taking my chances by not crediting to DL or NW but again I thought I'd be an CO flier. Thanks in advance. |
There are ways to trasnfer, but with only 2,000 it is basically a waste of time. The miles are stuck with CO. Currently CO miles do not expire so if you ever do switch to CO, you'll already have 2,000 miles in the account.

Is there a way to merge my old maiden name account with my new married name account? If so, I'll have significantly more I'd expect. |
You could build your balance to 5000 using car rentals, mileage mall, etc and transfer to Amtrak.

Well, this is good and bad news. I had a CO account under my maiden name. I (wrongfully) assumed those miles were long gone so I created the new account. (thought most airlines other than NW had the 18-month rule nowadays).
