B fare question to Brazil
 
I'm looking to get an upgrade on a flight from LAX to GRU. I see B fares available online, but when I call they want mileage and extra fees to upgrade. (I can see there is business class available on these flights too.)

I've upgraded B fares domestically but never internationally. When I've done it domestically I've just clicked the upgrade button and all is done. But are the rules different internationally? If you buy a B fare are you just first in line for an upgrade unless you pay the fees?

Any help understanding this would be appreciated!

There are no complimentary upgrades on flights that serve BusinessFirst markets. In short, the upgrade on the IAH-GRU leg will cost 25,000 miles and $100 each way on a B fare.

B fares to Southern South America (Brazil and Argentina) are not eligible for upgrades (referred to here as Bups) because it is a Business First cabin. Anywhere with a BF cabin will not have the B/Y ups, nor EUAs.

This is not entirely accurate. It is how the flight is marketed, not the actual cabin seating. There are still a few flights in the system (e.g. EWR-LIM) that operate with a BF cabin but that are not marketed as BF and therefore are eligible for complimentary elite upgrades.

You are still asleep...let's not forget the IAH-EWR runs that use 762s and 777s!

I am on the 767 in Novemeber. I see they also fly the 757 (and 737). I guess the 777 would be equiment positioning and not std equip for this route?

If the scheduling works out for you, you may want to look into Copa also. It will be more of a domestic F cabin, with a change of planes (and PC!) in PTY, but you can upgrade with miles only, or at EUA if the gods are willing. 2500 onepass miles bonus if you buy on Copaair.com also.^
