Terrible news

Does CO pilots have to maintain a certain level of fitness level to keep their jobs? I almost started a thread on this a few weeks back when I saw 2 CO pilots at EWR diving into their McDonalds. They were both borderline obese and definitely would be considered POS.

These two are clearly the exception and not the rule but it does make me wonder having lost a relative to heart failure as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle.

They do that too. One FA blocks the entrance to the FC galley for security (a tackle). And another FA always goes inside the cockpit and locks the door. Never only one person locked behind the door in the cockpit.

A statement from CO reports that the pilot was 61 and died of "natural causes".

My thoughts and prayers go out to the pilot's family and friends.

CNN/CO reporting that the Captain is 61 and died of natural causes. Probably a heart attack. My condolences to all.

Question: Which FO assumes command of the aircraft until landing? Most senior?
My assumption would be the original FO. He is rated by the FAA to fly the aircraft but is not "captain" on this particular flight. He would probably move to the left seat as well. Unknown if other non-revs are 777 type rated.

Condolences to the family. Hope they have the strength to tide over this difficult time.

Not knowing the specific situation - I wonder why the Captain did not call in sick - that is of course, presuming that he was feeling something not right.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8830/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

Condolences to the pilot's family and to the CO family as a whole.

They are saying that there is an extra crew on board, right? Is it actually a full crew that was being ferried or a relief pilot? And does the BRU-EWR flight normally have a 3 pilot on board because of the block time?

If it truly was a spare crew in place that would be a very lucky scenario for CO.

Apparently a pax pilot is assisting...

"The Port Authority says the co-pilot took control of the plane, along with a passenger who is a pilot..."

Also ironic that the pilot was 61 and this is flight # 61.
