Yes, do the bus. If the bus is running late - there will likely be others waiting and you could try to share a cab with someone. If traffic is heavy, then you will be paying wait time on a cab - but not on the bus.
The last bus is around 7:30pm - but then you should be there way before that to catch an 8pm out of JFK. The bus leaves out of the west end of the main terminal at LGA. |
Airport Express Bus is $13 and the best way when you have time to wait on it....and for it to make the terminal rounds at JFK. My last cab JFK-LGA was $33. Rent a car at any price - ridiculous. The bus rides to pick up the car at LGA and the airtrain from the drop at JFK eat at your time not to mention the cost which is unlikely to be $33 for most folks.
It's only about 8-10 miles between the airports but the traffic can be a bear. 1.5 to 2 hours from landing at LGA until you want to arrive at JFK will do the trick most days. |

I presume these aren't going to be on the same ticket? What is the earliest you could get into LGA?
I would take the earliest flight just to avoid the traffic in the late afternoon to JFK. Renting a car would be my preference, but it depends on whether you know the area or not. Actual journey time would be anywhere from 25min to 2+hrs. |

Just take a cab. That will be the easiest way.
It will be much faster than renting a car (you have to take a bus to pick up, rent the vehicle, then drop off at JFK, take another bus and arrive at JFK T4) and quicker than the bus since the bus only runs on its set schedule. Plus, there are no bus lanes, so traffic will be the same for the bus as for the cab (and when you arrive at JFK, the bus will first make stops at T1-3 before dropping you off at T4, adding additional time). When you return to JFK at 1:30 PM, assuming there are no delays and you make it through customs reasonably quickly, your ride back to LGA should be outside of rush hour and could take as little as 15 minutes. Definitely take the cab. |
