Any difference between canceling, or missing a flight?

Due to some last minute action (aka desperation) from some directors at my company, I need to reschedule a planned trip to DC on CO. I was just wondering if there was a difference based on what action is taken... call and cancel, or just not show up for the flight.

I realize there are penalties either way, just wanted to get info from more seasoned FTers. This is a non-refundable Y fare.

Regards

yeah, if your reservation is not cancelled and don't show your reservation has no value.

If you don't call and tell them you're not going the entire value of the ticket is lost. If you call and cancel you will have to pay a change fee and will have the original value of the ticket as a credit to use on a future flight.

Are you sure it is a non-refundable Y? I didn't know there was such a thing. Every Y ticket I have ever purchased has been fully refundable and changeable with no fees.

But not until you rebook.

OP means "Y" as in "economy", I think.

Thanks for clarifying the change fee issue.

I didnt' understand the OP . I thought he meant "Y" as in Y fare class. Yes, I have had many non-refundable economy/coach fares in my life.

So did I at first.

Sorry all, you are correct, I meant coach, as in O. Such a shame, I just checked and my IAH-IAD leg was upgraded to F!

Not to worry...even the veterans here often refer to "economy" generically as "Y". Usually when a specific fare class is meant, something like "I was booked in full Y" or "I was on a lowly X fare" will be stated.

Sorry that you have to endure an upgrade, by the way.

Ah indeed big difference. In fact the real game is to book an international return connection with < 1hr in say EWR from LHR, then cancel just in time and rebook the later flight when you realize it is hopeless to make. That works. Failing to turn the trick in time and you need to book the one way with no credit for the paid miss. Yup, done it both ways...

For what it's worth, there are several instances in which one may have a non-refundable Y fare. For example, if you cancel a non-refundable fare and use the same PNR to rebook a Y fare you will end up with a non-refundable Y. I found this out the hardway...
