Why not charge for first class?

I Think the title says it all, but I know a while back we use to pay for upgrades on domestic first, and it did not bother me, because the service was good. I would much rather pay for my upgrade, get better service, and depending on status, get upgraded more often. Now let the rants begin! :p

CO already does...it's called "first class fare".

RSW Nov 7, 2008 2:11 pm

I am talking about instead of your upgrade being free, you pay a fee to upgrade.

Non-TypiCAL F/A Nov 7, 2008 2:13 pm

I believe the OP is referring to paying for upgrades. I can't wait to hear some of the responses to this thread!

Bad Bad IDEA!!

If CO charged a fee to upgrade into domestic F, it would make them less competitive and would probably loose a lot of frequent travelers and big spenders.

Billiken Nov 7, 2008 2:28 pm

Elites pay for free upgrades every time they book on CO even when it's not the most convenient itinerary or cheapest fare.

Why would you want to pay for it when you can get it for free??

eagle92 Nov 7, 2008 2:31 pm

What is with the threads lately that are suggesting "enhancing" onepass with diluted benefits?

Seriously people...do we really need to be giving them these ideas? They can surely come up with ways like this on their own...we want to see added benefits...not diluted benefits...:D

Most likely if CO did this the other airlines would follow. Ex: charging to check a bag.

Good point. I have an idea...how about charging to use the toilet. Maybe if we had to pay for it Continental will make them cleaner and more "cotton fresh." And then the other airlines can follow. :p :D :p

Please note I am not attacking you per se...just the notion of giving the airlines any ideas to further "enhance" our experience at further cost rubs me the wrong way...

When did we pay for upgrades? The 80's?

PSU Mudder Nov 7, 2008 2:48 pm

The only way I'd be in support of such an idea is if it made paid F a better value. And they'd have to REALLY step up the F experience for that to happen, basically offering $20+ bottles of wine and BF type service for domestic F. Not likely to happen.

bajrbajr Nov 7, 2008 2:49 pm

I think we should pay to...

Use of the JetWay... that is a real convenience that we don't deserve for free.
;-)
seriously, if you are willing to pay for first class, just buy a first class ticket.

If CO did this I'd guess they'd copy UA or AA and give free upgrades to their top tier elites, in the case of OnePass- their Platinums. While I wouldn't have a problem with this, if your FT signature is up-to-date and you're a CO Gold, you'd still probably never get a seat up front. Be careful what you wish for!

I am not talking about paid F I am talking about upgrading from a cheep ticket. The way 90% of us get into first in the first place.

Exactly my point. I have done well on upgrades as a CO gold, but the pool of people trying to upgrade on certian flights might be less if CO charges. That way even a SE might get a chance to upgrade, if a higher elite level passenger does not choose to upgrade. Also, with paying a fee, CO will be able to make the first class product better.
