If you really have 5 hours between flights-- you can easily take the Airtran to either Newark in about 10 minutes or into NYC in about 30 minutes. Leaving time time for checking back in for your next flight, it should be very possible to get a better meal in either city.

That was actually my plan the last time I had ~6hours in EWR, of course the flight got diverted before making it to EWR and only had 2hrs by the time we actually got there. So Gallagher's it was, great food.

Wait until some of the seasoned folks here wake up and read the endorsement of Gallagher's as "good food." Heads might explode. It has a pretty bad reputation here, though it hasn't been mentioned in a while so maybe it has gotten better.

Take the train* into Newark Penn Station, cab or walk (about 1/2 mile) to Seabra's Marisqueira. Sit at the bar. It's on Madison Ave, just off Ferry. If you have extra time after your meal stop in Ferry Wine & Liquor (158 Ferry St) to sample and buy some port. Or, around the corner in the other direction is Seabra's Supermarket (Lafayette bet Madison & Monroe), where you can buy some interesting delicacies.
Map of the area
* or a cab to the corner of Ferry & Madison, Ironbound section of Newark
