ETKT vs PTKT

Can someone explain to me how this works? When a reservation is made or changed drastically it must now be e-ticketed? Is this an automated process? Why does it not occur certain times? I have tried to board and the agent tells me "oh you have a paper ticket" - and then looks at me like I'm an idiot.

Well yeah, honey, it's printed on paper.

Can anyone clarify this scenario?

CO moved to an e-ticket only policy at least a couple of years ago. So, if you have a paper ticket that was issued by a travel agent and you have CO reissue the ticket, CO will reissue an e-ticket instead of a paper ticket.

I have a couple paper tickets issued by CO. Not all tickets are e-ticket eligible.

What are some examples of tickets that CO still issues in paper form?

My most recent one (2 years ago) was a trip to Vietnam. Generally it is either a country that requires paper tix or an itinerary that has multiple carriers that can't eticket together.

IATA agencies no longer issue paper tickets, and the vast majorty of IATA member carriers have done likewise.

CO told me that my flight on AZ to LIN is not e-ticket eligible, so an award itin going into there got me a paper ticket.

I also have a ticket with AS connecting to AM, with a final destination of EZE. I'm not sure what triggered the paper (AM, EZE or the AS-AM combo), but that had to be paper as well.

I hope yer flying that one soon. Between Benito Berlucsoni and Alitalia's unions, you better get to LIN before AZ goes belly up.

By the way, what would CO do if AZ or another partner croaked on pax in the middle of an award itinerary?

Surely they'd better get BACK from LIN...
