What is the overgrown monument near EWR?
Tried searching the forums but couldn't find anything.
Does anyone know what that strange monument / memorial is that you can see on the right side of the monorail before arriving at the NJ Transit station. It looks like a white concrete circular channel with spokes leading to a slightly elevated center. It's surrounded by a chainlink fense and doesn't look like it's been tended for years. I know this is a bad discriptions if you haven't seen it - but if you did you'll know exactly what I'm describing.
Thanks!

I know exactly what you are talking about and often wonder what it is. It is a triangle with paths connecting the corners and some benches (I think). But it is now ridiculously over grown.
Here's a link to it from Google Maps.

I never noticed that. Probably because I am overwhelmed with the garbage smell that has overtaken the EWR NJ Transit station lately.

I believe that it is part of the old Newark City Cemetery (see the ground-level photo in the link below), which has a sad but interesting history.

It's the old Newark Potters Field. It's definitely a sad looking place.

I can not believe I never noticed that all the times I am on the monorail. I will make a point of looking for it next time. I read the article that was linked, how sad.

I snapped some pictures Saturday:
View through the locked gate: http://img93.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nccgatezm4.jpg
Monument near entrance: http://img88.imageshack.us/my.php?im...cplaquesh9.jpg
Derelict building adjacent: http://img112.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nccroadyj7.jpg
Inscription on sidewalk: http://img221.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nccsignrb5.jpg (reads Newark City Cemetary/Active 1869-1955)
View from tram: http://img221.imageshack.us/my.php?i...cctram1rf3.jpg
Another view from tram: http://img155.imageshack.us/my.php?i...cctram2os2.jpg
The front gate was locked, and I couldn't find another way in. Scaling the 6' chain link fence is an option, but I wasn't dressed for that
