Pay $50 for standby?
 
I checked in today and wanted to get on an earlier flight standby and was told by the agent that i needed to pay $50 to do this. When did this come into effect? Any ways around this? THanks.

It's been discussed on here quite a bit. I think it came into effect ~ 2 months ago. A search might provide some useful results. As for getting around it, there are no ways that have been encountered, except buying a refundable fare. You'll find that it's a big peeve of lots of people on here, including myself... elites should be free from this, but that's another topic.

irr ops and weather are a way around, but as far as i know, thats about it.

Say you're on a 4PM flight from XXX-YYY and there are weather issues causing flights to be delayed across the board. If there was a 3PM flight from XXX-YYY that's also delayed, they might put you on the delayed 3PM flight instead for free.
