There is no set-in-stone date yet. CO has only announced their plans to enter the alliance sometime in mid 2009.

CO has to wait until DL and NWA merge before it can do anything.

And then another 9 months after that for the escape clause in the contracts to become effective. If the DL/NW merger closed tomorrow then the change would be May 22 at the earliest. The longer the DL/NW thing takes to happen, the further out the CO/*A will happen.

I believe the earliest they could switch is 9 (nine) months after the date that the NWA-DL merger closes. Even though the pilots of both airlines have now approved a collective bargaining agreement, the closing is still months away: it has not yet received all government approvals.

As an example, if the merger closed on December 31, 2008, CO would not be able to switch alliances until September 1, 2009.

So, live life accordingly within Skyteam, with patient expectations.

As others have said, probably mid 2009.
However, might we see FF agreements with UA and/or other *A members before CO enters?

Haha, this really made my day. What a joke. Sorry, Continental is pretty decent for an American airline but calling Singapore, Lufthansa, Thai and many others crap and further believe Continental is insane. Have some more Cool Aid!

But according to in-cabin announcements by US, it will be immediate. That's why we all should go out and join Dividend Miles!

Dude, have you flown Thai, United, or USAirways lately?

I specifically said that CO is decent for an American airline which means that they can certainly compete with what Star Alliance has to offer within the US. Never done US and I doubt I miss anything but my United experience was definitely not worse than CO, I would at least call it equal! They treat me nice and bring me from one point to another without major delays and even better, stupid excuses, etc. With CO, I had to be with a status customer on the PNR to be treated nice. As soon as I was by myself, they treated me like

But calling Star Alliance full of crap airlines is just stupid. Ya right, I forgot how great your friends from AF, DL, etc. are. :D

In the meantime, it should be interesting to watch with which other *A airlines CO will enter into one-on-one partnerships. I would guess that last month's announcement about CO/AC code-sharing will not be the only such announcement prior to CO's eventual official entry into the *A.

If anything, I would think these statements are reversed. I read tons of stories on the UA board of non-status pax being insulted by UA crew/GA's and there are minimal examples of that here.

HA! Any red blooded American knows it is spelled, Kool-Aid! :p:p:p

At the Vegas DO the official word was do nothing different and we (CO) will let you know to change your behavior. As others have stated, it's a bit away and has a lot of dependencies. At the earliest, next summer but more realistically, by the end of 2009 is my guess.

kingalien Aug 21, 2008 1:19 pm

Adding on to Fozz's post, CO execs stated the "paperwork" have been filed. Best case scenario sometime 2009 but very likely won't roll out until beginning of 2010.
