BWI/DCA Co-Terminals? Possible to Standby Out of DCA vs BWI? Flight back?

I am booked next week on BWI-CLE-BWI. This was due to the price difference of $250 vs $980.

I would love to fly in/out of DCA instead. Would they be able to do the $25 change on the way out at DCA? On the way back?

Are BWI and DCA co-terminals?

I am Gold, if that makes a difference

Thanks,

randomman

Not officially.

What do co-terminals have to do with standby or same-day changes?

I would have thought that CO would let you stand by for a Co-Terminal. So in the OP case I too would book the cheapest tkt and then see if I could fly into/out-of a CO-Term which I wanted to do from get go.

The only prob for Me would be If I park my car by 1 Airport and cant fly back there on my way back then Id have to waste alot of time finding a way to get back to my car.

So if I booked BWI but fly out of DCA and cant get back into DCA then I will have to fly into BWI and find a way to get over to DCA to get my car. Someone who isnt parking a car at the Airport wont have this potential problem. Thusly very little chance that I will want to change the Airport I booked my tkt out of

First, CO doesn't allow standby at all anymore, it's same-day confirmed or nothing.

But more importantly, co-terminals are for fare calculation purposes, not for voluntary rerouting. You may find a flexible agent, but if you don't you have no let to stand on.

I tried this maybe ten time last year. Trying to fly standby on the far more expensive EWR nonstop rather than a connection to LGA. 50% success rate. Usually the elite desk was the best route.

Since I've found that this isn't really in the rules I've stopped trying to beat the fare and only try when there is a weather delay or other issue. I'm 100% for the year.

Think I stand a chance calling early Monday morning to pay the confirmed change fee to switch BWI-CLE to DCA-CLE? Worth a shot?

I am minutes away from DCA...would be very nice. I would be taking a taxi to BWI and back anyways, so ideally I can standy on the flight back to DCA...

Thanks,

randomman

Well it certainly couldn't hurt to call and ask. Just don't show up at DCA and expect to be able to fly.

DCA and BWI are not co-terminals. The fares vary significantly, and sometimes DCA can even be cheaper. DCA/IAD are more related.

DCA and BWI are considered different airports. They may show on some websites as alternative airport, but that does not mean they are interchangeable.

For the past couple of years I have not needed to fly out of BWI - as the DCA fares have been nearly as good or in some cases better than BWI. Although right now with Southwest fare sales, BWI is cheaper.

I wasnt talking about simply showing up at an airport and asking to go SBY.Although a person can most certainly do that either via a check-in counter person or kiosk and pay the $25 or $50. Best to call up when one is within the targeted 12 hrs area and seeing what if anything can be done. Cant hurt

Thanks everyone. I will call Monday and see what can be done.

I will report back.

According to the average CO agent, DCA and BWI are not co-terminals. That said, it is easy to reroute from BWI to DCA in the even of irregular ops, especially in winter. If not during irregular ops, your likelihood of changing airports depends on your persuasive skills.

Channa, this is a rare occasion where I will disagree with you. I started a thread last July regarding standing-by out of DCA when ticketed for BWI. CO Insider replied with a post of co-terminal airports recognized by CO. IAD/DCA was on the list, but BWI was not.
