This is in line with a quote I received back in April for $259 each way LAX-HNL for <25 lb. pet, with reservations up to 24 hours in advance, traveling on the same flight, recent (w/in 10 days) health certificate required. Who knows if this fee has increased recently. The one advantage is you *can* earn miles for pets transported using the so-called PetSafe service - but not for in-cabin pets. HA at the time was $175 each way, and they allow in cabin interisland for free, FWIW (once you've jumped all the state quarantine hurdles).

I've traveled in cabin with a 30 lb. dog. He was a little squished, but better than the alternatives (long-term kennel or cargo). He was a quiet squished though: None of the other passengers ever knew he was there. The Sherpa bags are the way to go. (Also, sorry to hear the Yorkie is no longer with us.)

30 lbs!!!! Is the dog on the shorter side? My Schnauzer is somewhat taller rather than heavy. I would have never thought he would fit under those seats. Maybe the middle seat (ugh) has more room? I thought the Yorkie got squished and he was only 7 lbs. First class, right?? I fly coach.

I agree Sherpa bags are the best. Maybe, I'll see how big the sherpa bags go??! $500-600 is too much to transport Charlie in cargo with all the risks (real and imagined) unless it was a long trip. Both my parents can come to LAS and visit the dog for about the same price AND get an actual seat.

Thanks also for the kind thought about Willy, my Yorkie.

Uh, yeah... he was, shall we say, a 'wide load': a very low-to-the-ground terrier mix - 'portly' maybe is the term of art.

This was in Y. Under-seat space is very different depending on aircraft, and I actually found the dreaded RJs might have the most room - of course, I also got away with being in the exit row with him on the RJs which is definitely not allowed, but the CoExpess FAs maybe are less clued in. The 757-200 did not have enough room at all. Those are the only two that I remember details on.

Thumbs down

Maybe Scott could weigh in here about why this increase was necessary. In reality - Continental is not providing any "extra" services for any pet travelling in-cabin, nor do they have any responsibility for carrying the pet onboard. There are no increases in fees due to the weight of the pet, as the pet must replace a piece of carry-on luggage.

This could be justified in the case of a pet travelling underneath in cargo, as for sure the fees for the pet van and handling costs have gone up - but this increase is just money in the pocket - which they are not doing anything to earn!

Just my bitter $0.02.

Nor do they know if you bring your pet on board without paying this fee if the animal is quiet and in a low profile bag raising another possibility appropriate to a fee paid in return for nothing.

Interesting topic.

1. I've talked to a few people carrying on pets and they all said they didn't pay a fee for the pet(s).

2. I've seen at least 4 pets in BF on 757s more than once.

3. I've seen a single passenger carry on 2 pets in both Coach and BF.
