Splitting reservation for possible upgrade?
I'll be traveling FRA-LAS soon with my family and since they have no status with CO I will not be able to get an upgrade for myself on the EWR-LAS leg. The loads look rather light as of now and my chances of scoring an upgrade are rather good. I read on this board a while ago about splitting myself from the reservation via the CO.com Online help desk. First of all: How do I do that? And secondly: Will doing so cause any harm to the rest of my family? My complete routing is FRA-EWR-LAS -- LAS-FLL (on US, but should be on the same ticket since the LAS-FLL leg shows in the My account section of CO.com) -- MCO-EWR-FRA. If no upgrade should be available by the day of travel, will I nonetheless keep my seat assignment next to them in Y? Will we still be able to check in at the same time/desk? Will there be no problems with the LAS-FLL leg on US?
Thanks a lot for your help guys, it is appreciated! |
My understanding is, if your onepass number is in the reservation, you'll get your upgrade if available. I THINK you have the best shot if you do OLCI exactly 23 hours, 59 minutes before the departure time of the EWR-LAS segment, rather than 24 hours before the FRA flight departure.
I am assuming of course, you are silver, and not gold or plat, if you are gold or plat, the companion upgrade becomes an issue, and you might need the records split. |
You should definitely call to split the record and get your own confirmation number (separate reservation), in order for you to even be considered for the upgrade; and no, it will not change anything about your family's reservations, seat assignments, etc. Your seat assignment will also stay the same (seated with your family, even though on different reservations) unless the upgrade is processed on the EWR leg.
Relevant info from co.com excerpted below. Tips to Help Ensure an Upgrade Here are some tips Elite members should know about our First Class/Business Class upgrade processing to ensure upgrade eligibility: If a reservation includes multiple Elite members, the Elite members will be automatically upgraded according to the rules governing the lowest Elite level in the party. If a reservation includes companions who do not qualify for OnePass Elite upgrades, the upgrade will not be processed automatically. Elite members should call the Elite Priority Desk to request a separate reservation for themselves. For an Elite member to be eligible to receive an upgrade, they must make sure that the name on the reservation exactly matches the name on their OnePass account and photo identification or passport. Automated processing of complimentary upgrades is available for flights within or between the 48 contiguous U.S. and Alaska, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The issue about getting a companion upgraded, provided that you're either Gold or Platinum, has nothing to do with the travelers being on the same confirmation number or reservation; you and the companion need only be traveling on the same flights. Further down on that same page linked above is info on the companion upgrade policy. |
You can easily split off one person from the reservation online. Just look at the reservation under "view" and choose the option that says separate or split or something like that. I just did this last Tuesday and continental.com split the reservation and gave two confirmation numbers.

Thanks for your help guys but I could not find the "separate" option on the view page. It only has "Cancel, Email summary, Print itinerary, Export to Outlook, Rename, Reserve a Hotel, Reserve a Car" as options

The option is in the 'Passengers:' segment (after the Flight Details)

so make sure they are in the seat assignments you want them in prior to making the call.
Trivial point, but an easy one to forget... |

In particular, these will be their seats if you are upgraded, with a good chance of a stranger coming to claim your old seat. Make sure this is set up to play out as you intend. How you actually sit is up to you as a family, but the assignment you want to peel off in the event of an upgrade should be yours.

Also be aware that in the event of a schedule change or automatic re-booking due to cancellation, the computer may put you on different flights. This can be rectified with a quick call, but you'll want to monitor it so there are no surprises at the airport.

Using an existing thread because it's along the lines of what I am interested in but I have an additional twist.
I am traveling with my wife SMF-EWR (through IAH) or LAS-EWR. I am silver but my wife has no status. We'll also be flying relative low fare buckets (so not Y, H, K, M, N, or B for the non-elite mileage upgrade). We are flying what I am guessing are very light load flights (at least the SMF-IAH leg). My specific question is: Can I use my miles to upgrade my wife (elites seem to be able to upgrade any economy fare for either 15k or 5k miles). I only want to upgrade her and take my chances on the free elite upgrade. Thanks for the help! |

Thanks sbm12!
I haven't checked the upgrade availability yet; I still need to work with API to try to book seats through the domestic coach program. Trying to do a bit of complicated planning to maximize the value of my FF membership and AMEX Plat annual fee :D |
