certainly JAL, Cathay, and Qantas offer pacific/asia coverage that's first rate, and AA, LAN and Mexicana offer similar for Latin America. Africa and Mideast coverage are supplemented by Royal Jordanian and AA's codeshares with SN (who are not a oneworld member).

where oneworld comes across as somewhat bare compared to * is continental Europe. oneworld lacks, at present, a high-capacity/high-efficiency hub for Europe access. There aren't a ton of flights to IB's hub at MAD, and while there is a lot of LHR service, it can't be considered a high-efficiency choice for connectors (at least until the mess at LHR T5 is sorted). The other current european members are Malev and Finnair, both relatively small. CO's relative success at direct flights to "secondary" European cities would significantly augment overall access for the alliance.

What is more troublesome for the casual leisure flyer is the lousy FF miles many of the oneworld partners give out. Even for AAdvantage, I believe you'll find many 70%, 25% and tonnes of 0% on the discount Y fares. And I'm talking about RDM, not EQM. I won't expect they'll offer more Onepass than AAdvantage miles.
Not so fast on AMS. Way too much Oil Traffic (and too many corporate contracts) for CO to just start cutting flights. They won't just cede IAH-AMS to KL.

No alliance.

Plus they never responded to my status match email, so I'm boycotting them.

Did someone say Finnair?

Please bring the MD-11 to IAH before they go out of passenger service!

Yes, depending on the fare class you may not earn the miles you think you may be entitled to. An important footnote though; if the flight is operated by a OneWorld carrier but carries an AA flight number you will receive all of your miles as your normally would on AA metal.

Here is a link to the individual chart for each of the airlines that AA code shares with. OneWorld members are denoted on the page.

This might give you some idea as to what you should expect from OneWorld should CO join.

you'd think they might edit it before putting it across the wire...

American Airlines' talks with Continental are focused on forming an alliance. Meanwhile. Continental is in advanced merger talks with United Airlines.
"Meanwhile" is not a sentence...

rkkwan...

Who (other than Finnair and KL) are still operating the MD-11 in scheduled passenger service? I'd very much like to burn some miles for the KL CUR-AMS flight.

Why not just do IAD-AMS? I saw a KL MD-11 at IAD the other day, but I didn't check the schedule to see whether it was the result of an equipment swap or just normal equipment rotation.

Because IAD is not quite as desirable a starting point as CUR.

I also would prefer CO to merge with UA and join *A rather than AA and oneworld. Actually, I would prefer CO to remain a stand-alone company, but obviously that may not be possible in the long term competitive environment.

I am sorry. But I really think a CO/UA merger will be pretty disastrous. If the choices are merger with UA or alliance with AA, I'll much prefer the latter.

Hmmm, so I may be converted into an AA ExPlat and LH Sen. This could get interesting.

I do not necessarily disagree that a CO UA meger would be disastrous from an operational and customer service standpoint. Nontheless, when the dust settles, I would rather have access to *A than oneworld. You might be right, though, that an alliance with AA would be less painful for the customer than a merger with UA.
