your best bet will be at IAH at the gate for the EWR flight. i highly doubt an agent in SEA, ANC, etc. will change the ticket. but, standby shouldn't be a problem once you get to IAH. i've done it many times before.

same here.. i've managed to get on a direct flight to ewr/jfk regardless of the
origin.. i've only tried at the gate.

Do it at the PC in SEA or in IAH, not in ANC. If you're just doing a quick turn up and back the GAs will be dealing with other stuff, like getting your flight ready to board. Don't bother them with this there. The PC staff is much better equiped to deal with this sort of thing in that they are there to help with this sort of thing and not otherwise engaged.

I called the elite line from ANC and then changed my return to EWR. I'm sure the weather had something to do with their willingness to change the flight w/o question.
