It's amazing the resources some people will apply to sit in first. We all have our price. Looking at future flights, I do hesitate over paying $50 extra (-$10 fare difference) for SJC, but I fly all the time, and after trips to India, Australia, Thailand, Japan I think anyone who can get uncomfortable in domestic coach is a serious wimp, not a good candidate for space travel. Applying that opinion to myself, I hesitate over the $50.

It's not about the meal, I cook better than any restaurant I can afford, and scanning the FC menu is generally an exercise in crossing out choices, "Do I really want to know how other people eat this?" I grind my own flour, so the pasta's out. And so forth.

Plenty of people are willing to pay $1000 for first. $50 for good chances at first is a deal, from that perspective.

Sorry to stir up any culture wars here, it is amusing to land in SJC if one was expecting SFO. Jokes are one way to prepare people for a small airport with inefficient public transportation.

It's amazing how controversial this is. Even with the cab ride, he may have paid more than $50 less flying into SJC rather than SFO, so it might be a wash. Or maybe he walked away with some money in his pocket even! How? The SJC flights don't seem to fill up as fast (perhaps because people are worried about flying into a 3rd world country as you're insinuating). Therefore, the lower fare basis codes hang around for longer.

In my own case, I booked a round trip from SJC to EWR in June. The fare for that was $288 plus tax, or $318 total (round trip)! For the same trip out of SFO, the lowest fare was in a higher bucket. I was seeing $368 plus tax ($388 total probably) as the lowest SFO EWR fare...$70 more than out of SJC. If you're near the San Jose Airport anyway, or even a $50 cab ride away, it still seems more than viable as an economic prospect, especially if they served you osso buco for dinner, instead of a cheeseburger and macaroni salad.

So, maybe OP is smarter than all of us, even though he has become a lightning rod for some unknown and inappropriate reason. Anonymous message boards tend to bring out people's worse behavior, I suppose.

I just got my EAU for EWR - LAS this Sat as a Plat, anyone know what the choices are for dinner meal service?

That would really depend on what time of day the flight is scheduled to depart.

Departs at 7:15pm and has dinner listed.

You should get a menu-based meal service...

Warm Nuts, served in ramekin
Appetizer (likely salad with some smoked salmon)
Dinner Choice (choose one of two or three entrees)
Warm Bread Service

Beverage Service

Ice Cream with choice of sundae toppings

Coffee/Tea Service

If you departed IAH instead of EWR, you would receive cold nuts (served in bag), a choice of salad (chicken or shrimp) or hot sandwich, both served with a bowl of soup. Dessert is a "Dentist's Friend" candy, and freshly baked cookies are served about 45 minutes before arrival.

As you mentioned..They are ALLREADY paying for it..the F/C is sold out and it appears the service level is acceptable..Companies provide service/fares according to what th markets will bear..if this product is soldout on a consistant basis..I wouldnt think there needs to be any change in service..

None of this is correct. That is the transcon meal service. As discussed, EWR-LAS is NOT transcon.
You will get warm nuts, soup and a choice of 2 entrees -- one is salad w/protein (chicken or shrimp usually), the other varies. Maybe lasagna, a chicken dish, etc. You do get ice cream sundaes for dessert, but note that this is only on the "dinner" flights, not the "lunch" flights. True transcon lunch flights do get sundaes.

How is EWR-LAS not a transcon flight? I thought everything EWR-West Coast was considered transcon, or is LAS considered a leisure destination? What is IAH-LAS considered, and how is it different?

Either way, it was quite impressive for airline fare and head and shoulders above the partially unidentifiable mass covered in brown mystery sauce that NWA passes off as a FC meal these days.

transcon in CO language is EWR to cities on the pacific coast. flights to SAN, LAX (and its surrounding airports), SFO (and its surrounding airports), SEA and PDX and their respective return flights are transcons. that's it.

anything westbound from EWR, ie PHX, LAS, SLC, RNO, DEN is not considered transcon and falls under the typlical 3.5 hour+ meal description described on co.com.

in addition, CLE to pacific coast cities are NOT considered transcons, nor are any pac coast flights originating from IAH.

While the product is good, a lot of the service depends on the crew.

I was shocked to hear my SO's experience on her latest SFO-EWR transcon in F. I was flying NW that day in F, and when we discussed our respective flights, my flight service was far superior to hers.

While CO has a stronger product than NW, a lazy crew can take away a lot. With that said, if the crew is that bad, a lot can be resolved if you're not ashamed to hit the FA call button as needed. ;)

As for day of week, I have missed the EWR-SJC upgrade on Sundays at times. Obviously it's better than EWR-SFO, but it's not exactly a sure thing.

Now if anyone remembers EWR-OAK or EWR-SMF, now THAT was a sure thing.
