Random Online BP ? [Sequence number question]

So I checked in online and have a random question
In the black box that takes up most of the center of the page:
On the Left side there is a Continental Airlines logo, then Name, Date, FF#, Confirmation # & Mileage, and Flight #
On the right side there is an Elite Access logo and right under it " 47 " is on the same line (but far to the right) of my name. What is this number? The flight is BOS-IAH on a 737, pretty full. So is it the # of people checked in before me?

It's the sequence number -- you are the 47th person to check in for the flight.

Generally, that is the case, but a couple of times in the past year I received numbers like 465 and 653. I didn't realize that CO had already acquired an A380.:D

Those high numbers are still the sequence numbers. If the flight has stops there can easily be sequence numbers higher than the number of seats on the aircraft.

I recently had 66 on an ERJ flight. It was a simple DTW-EWR with no continuing flight out of EWR under the same flight number. I suspect it was because I was placed on an "earlier" flight that was delayed to depart at a similar time as my originally scheduled (also delayed) flight. I assume that many pax had previously been rebooked on various flights.

When requesting a seat change, I commented on this with the gate agent. She assured me that these numbers were random and had nothing to do with checking in. When I bet her lunch in Gordon's Galley that I was right, she responded with a very puzzled look  .

That could've happened, also the onward flight might have been into DTW, not out of EWR (e.g., CLE-DTW-EWR).
