Y up Fare rules
 

Hi can a Co silver one pass do a Y up on two tixs he he pays for both on one PNR.

Obviously, my traveling companion is non elite,

I thought this do to the case, but after search both CO site and this forum, i'm confused.

No, non-elite companion upgrades on CO are only for Gold/Platinum and can only be processed at the airport, within 2 hours of departure. It doesn't matter what fare type it is.

If you want your confirmed-at-ticketing upgrade off the Y fare, you need to purchase the ticket separately, or if the ticket has already been purchased, you can call CO and split the PNRs, and then upgrade yourself. You could try to use miles to upgrade your companion in advance. The non-elite companion on a Y fare is eligible for a space-available upgrade at the airport, but those are at the bottom of the pecking order, and you'd have better luck going for a gold companion upgrade.

As a NW Gold, how does the Y-Up thing work? I've done it before by making the reservation, then calling, but is there an easier way?

Well, for CO elites on CO flights, it can be done via the website, either at the time of ticketing, or anytime after ticketing (e.g., if a travel agent purchased the ticket, you can go to CO.com yourself and process the upgrade). I have no idea how Co.com recognizes NW elite status, and doubt many regulars on this forum do either -- we're mostly CO elites! Certainly you can try doing it on the website, and let us know! :)

CO.com recognizes NW elite status just fine - the same way it does OnePass. Y-Up elite upgrades are offered to NW elites the same they are to CO elites.

If a non elite purchases a y fare, can they do the first upgrade? Or is that upgrade only for elite members? just a question.

Only elite members are eligible for upgrades on Y fares at the time of purchase. Non-elites on full Y fares may stand by at the airport for a seat in F, but they are at the absolute bottom of the F standby waitlist.

Cool, thanks didnt know that. I always wondered how it was fair that anyone on a Y fare could upgrade infront of elites but I guess I understood the wording incorrectly:)

There is usually an A fare to be had for only $50 more than YUP, so that's the way for non-elites to go. In addition, the A fare is better in the cases of missed connections, delays, and involuntary reroutes because CO is obligated to give you an F seat on a later CO flight or on another carrier. YUP only entitles one to a Y seat in such cases.

Also applies to aircraft changes to smaller F cabins; we have lost a few Y-Up F seats this way.

I would also like a clarification as to how this works. I'm a NW Plat traveling on a Y-Fare. When I booked my ticket, FC was sold out (showed A0 D0 Z0 R0). Today, 1 seat showed up in FC. My reservation did not have a 'Y-Upgrade' button, so I called CO Reservations. They said that since I've inputted my NWA Elite #, I'd have to call NWA and have them process the complimentary upgrade. Didn't sound right to me, but I called NWA anyway. NWA said they can only process manual Y-Up's when flying NW metal. The only thing they could do w/my CO itinerary was upgrade me using my miles. Not what I had in mind...

Next, I called CO.COM support, where I was informed that the 1 FC seat was just snatched up and nothing was available in FC...

In case another seat opens up, what's the correct process - how can I, as a NW Elite, get upgraded on a CO Y-Fare (after booking my ticket?)
