Guess How Much

Just booked a monster 1 week trip on CO/AS. Without looking it up, guess how much the total itinerary was:

CO EWR-SAN on 8/13
AS LAX-SEA on 8/14
AS SEA-DEN on 8/15
CO DEN-IAH-SAT on 8/16
CO SAT-IAH-LGA on 8/17

Hint: The EWR-SAN leg is "N" class, the IAH-LGA is a "O" class. Another hint, I was SHOCKED at the total price.

No looking up fares, you have to guess.

Probably around $2K.

Your routing exceeds probably every attempt at flexibility airlines allow in fare calculation.

For example, flying AS LAX-SEA-DEN breaks your CO fare from calculating as a circle trip to an open jaw or one-way.

Now had you simply gone on CO:

EWR-SAN
DEN-LGA

Then, it would have been an open jaw (1/2 of each one way) somce EWR/LGA are co-terminals. However, since you're CO portion is:

EWR-SAN
DEN-SAT
SAT-LGA

You now have three one-ways with a gap in the middle.

Had you even closed the gap in the middle:

EWR-SAN
SAN-SAT
SAT-LGA

Then that would have been a circle (1/2 of each RT), which would likely have been a lower fare for those segments.

But you have none of that, so you have the lowest one-way of each of the city pairs:

EWR-SAN
SNA-SAT
SAT-LGA

The Alaska portion may cut you some slack, because you can at least get that as an open-jaw (plus AS's fare rules don't usually penalize someone for buying one-ways).

Even if you could do this all with one carrier, the LAX-SAN breakpoint is a killer, as LAX/SAN are not co-terminals. So whatever you do, this is a bunch of one-ways.

Come on down...

Is this like Price Is Right - closest bid without going over?

Assuming that's the rule (and knowing all the problems with the website), I'll guess...

$1

1/2 a semester's tuition?

The fare amount is:

the square root of J. Edward's monthly bar tab.

One thing for sure, it's more then I've paid for all my CO flights so far this year. :D
