Continental.com Check-In
 
I know on continental.com you are allowed to check-in 24 hours prior to departure. My father who is in New Jersey has a flight, EWR-SFO which departs at 08:40 AM Eastern time but I am in California and still up. Is there any reason, why I can't check him in at 5:40 AM Pacific time?

The departure time on the ticket is according to the time zone where the departure is, right?
