CO Operations impacted by Volcano / Jet Stream?
With the Augustine Volcano alive again in Alaska (Alaska Airlines cancelled most flights in/out of Anchorage and Fairbanks) and an unusual jetstream across the Pacific and US (bringing weeks of unending rain to Seattle and unusual warmth to the east coast megapolis), are CO operations being impacted on trans-Pacific routes?
I see CO cancelled their Anchorage flight, but not sure if flights elsewhere across/to the Pacific are being altered with unique routings and/or special fuel stops. |
What's funny is that if you look up the data on flightaware.com, there are lots of cargo flights still operating. And even last night, AS wasn't cancelling intra-AK flights either.
I looked up the flight route of CO7, which just left IAH on-time for NRT. One of its Waypoint is NODLE, which is very close to the volcano. CO9 EWR-NRT uses one of the Polar Route or A218 like today, which flies way north of ANC. CO88/98 coming back usually fly north of ANC. Don't know whether CO6/8 from NRT are affected or not, or how. My guess is that it's not causing major disruption, at least not yet. |

I was looking at some other US-Asia flights on flightaware.com yesterday, and did find some route ranges on certain flights. For example, CX883 and CX885 (LAX-HKG) both are making stops at ICN. Usually, they fly near ANC to get to flight route R218, but one flew further south and then go back North after ANC; the other basically fly along the shore on a more Northern routing.
And looking at today's flights, seem like a lot of West Coast - Asia flights are flying a more southerly route. Not sure if it's just wind or if the volcano plays any part. |
In fact, all CX's flights LAX-HKG have been going to ICN or TPE in the last two days. Same thing with CX and SQ's SFO-HKG. Only West Coast-HKG flight that's not making fuel stop is UA869 from SFO.
