snow in newark

Writing this from the SFO Mariott waiting for my CO749 SFO-EWR at 9.50 pm. However it seems as if snow has hit EWR, at least it seems as if all flights leaving to EWR from SFO this afternoon have been hit by a delay. However the 749 stills seems to be on time, but i bet that in a couple of hours this flight will see a delay or cancellation, am definately not looking forward to a early am flight.

And after reading that despite flying F there is no lounge access i think i might just hang around the hotel and regularly check up on this flight. Are there any pay to use lounges in the domestic airport terminal 1 in SFO?
Any body else stuck or having delays into EWR tonight?

Hmm... anyway lets see what happens. :)

Flight 348 (which I'm going to assume is the inbound aircraft to SFO for 749) is already in-flight, with an estimated arrival time of 9:00pm. Looks like you're going to be ok.

Flt 307 is your inbound aircraft (coming from IAH). It is off the ground from IAH expected in at 831 pm. I suspect it will be the same crew (from IAH) continuing to EWR.

In a similar vein, how does snow affect hub operations up North? I mean, there are so many northern hubs - DTW, CLE, EWR, ORD, MSP just to name a few. How much snow does it take to really clog the system up?

I'm connecting at EWR on 12/21/05, and would like to think only an unusually bad storm would seriously affect schedules.... Right? Wrong?

All hubs have different snow operations. As for EWR...

Well, that's a horse of a different color. It's the amount of snow that really matters ( of course a major blizzard really does). At EWR most delays are volume related. Meaning any glitch in the weather, even minor, can cause delays. There are delays at EWR at peak times of the day even when the weather is perfect. Any time ATC requires just a bit more spacing bewteen planes EWR becomes the home of the delay and misconnect.

Last week I had a EWR flight cancelled the said for weather, which I believe were just higher then average winds

we're expecting more snow late tonight through tomorrow morning, so if your travel plans include EWR, please think again :)

Indeed, i'm sitting in the P-Club awaiting my flight to Ottawa... It says "awaiting inbound aircraft" but I'm not sure how to tell if it's left the ground or where it's coming from. FWIW it's flight 2683 EWR->YOW today at (laugh) 3:25.

If anyone else is up here stop by and say hi :) I'm sitting in a corner next to conference room B an C.

All of tomorrow's XJ flights originating in canada have been cancelled. People reaccomodated to CLE. No word if extra flights ex-CLE have been added.

Longest travel weather delay I ever had in my career was at EWR due to a December 2001 snowstorm.

Landed BOS-EWR at around 8:00 a.m.
Left for CLE at 7:00 p.m.

Based on my experience most northern airports are equiped to handle snow, now how much falls clearly will have a negative effect. A few inches will delay things a little but most flights will get through. More that 6 or 8 inches usually result in some flights being cancelled.

I find that most of the time a snow storm is not a suprise event and when I am traveling into or out of winter weather I am a little more proactive in my travel planning. It never ceases to amaze me when people fly during "predicted" winter weather and then are mad at the airlines when they cancel flights or they are significantly delayed.

Personally I prefer to fly in the winter as opposed to summer as snow storms are relatively predictable where T-storms are not... I have more problems in the summer than the winter with delays and such.

Let me conclude my EWR-SFO story. The CO649 was delayed 3-4 hours, but my CO749 left on time, and even arrived into EWR ahead of schedule. It was an international configured 757 so was able to get a decent sleep in F, however I must admit that the recline and foorrest length is not up to the standards of today seen on other flights (and prob. on the CO777 also - haven't been on that).

The "snack" was a soup and a steak and cheese sandwich, and the highligt of it all "two small peices of chocolate". Wish they would serve something a bit lighter, but I guess this comes down to individual taste.

Overall a good flight, friendly crew and professional service.

I've found EWR is generally pretty good unless there's a big blizzard out there. I just flew EWR-SEA last night, as the snow storm was working its way up the east coast, and things were still fairly normal when we took off at 6 PMish. Between BOS and EWR (the two northeastern airports I mostly use), I'd say they do a pretty good job of dealing with snow. Obviously, there are delays when you're flying in lots of snow, but they deal pretty well with them. Certainly better than SEA, which essentially shuts down if it needs to de-ice planes or try to snowplow the runways.

I was flying IAH-BOS Sunday and was delayed 1.5 hours due to the snow. Was originally going to connect through EWR on CP52, but they downgraded the flight from a 767 to a 737-700. Needless to say, they were oversold by about 50 people, so I not only got a $200 voucher for delaying my trip by 3 hours, but I got a direct flight and a seat in FC! Kudos to CO and the Gate Agent (who, by the way,got a nice email from theblakefish!)!!
