CO Policy on Overhead Bin Space
What is CO's official position on the overhead bin where you are allowed to put your carry-on? Are you allowed to use any overhead bin or are you only allowed to use the space above your seat?
I have seen this point argued many times on FT but have never seen anything regarding a CO "official policy." |
They always have been, still are and always will be shared space. Any confusion resides solely in the minds of those with a deluded sense of entitlement.

Overhead bin space is shared and first come, first served!

Disagree totally, when I purchase a ticket I purchase the use of 1 seat and the allocated amount of overhead space (usually 1/3 of a bin in coach). I do NOT have to have a deluded sense of entitlement to realize I have rented space for my butt and my bag. If this was all just shared space there would be no designated numbers on the bins. It is those who think they have a right to more than the space they have paid to use that want to believe it is all shared space so that they can accommodate their excess baggage.

Just took a 767-400 from EWR-HNL last week and, if I'm not mistaken, the overheads in BF were labeled to match seats/rows.

Where in the fare rules or CO's Contract of Carriage is there ANY allocation of overhead space to anyone? In fact the CoC specifically states that "Subject to carry-on storage capacities of the aircraft, CO reserves the right to check a Passenger’s carry-on baggage," so you're doing yourself a disservice to assume your ticket entitles you to 1/3 of an overhead bin in coach. Oh, and those numbers "on the bins" are actually for the seats... |

This is really quite ridiculous. Isn't sharing the first thing we're taught in kindergarten? The overhead bins are community space, to be shared as any 5 year old can do. If the bin above your seat is full, what do you do? If you're sitting beneath a bin that is full of emergency equipment and unusable to you, what then? Community space. |
Wow, this thread makes me wonder about the various ways one perceive the world around us.
Anyways, I pity those sitting on the "A" side of the ERJ. They have no overhead space. And those flying in the "D" seat on 767 BF get reserved overhead space on both sides of the aisle. Wow! |

So, the next time I fly, and I use no overhead bin space, I should be refunded a significant percentage of my fare, correct? And, persons who take up less cubic yardage than the average person's body, should also be entitled to a refund. Of course, these discounts would be offset by the "obesity premium". ;) |

While I agree with most of what has been posted, I do have a major complaint about people using overhead bins.
On the several occassions when I have been sitting in Y, I have had to walk to the back on the plane to find room for my roller bag when I was sitting in row 5 or 6. This was because people sitting in row 25 on the 73G feel entitled to use the overhead bins in row 5/6 so they do not have to carry their bag to the back of the plane. So when arriving at my destinations I had to wait for the entire plane to deboard to get my bag. You can only imagine the looks that I have given people from the back of the plane retreiving luggage from my overhead bin. My feeling is that if someone wants to avoid checking luggage, they should use the overhead bin near their seat and not take advantage of being able to board before the rest of Y (sans Elite of course). |
