Is this allowable under OnePass rules?
 

I have a long business trip that flies in and out of the same city arriving late Sunday 2/1 and departing back home on Friday 2/13.

My question is, can I book a separate roundtrip flight in the middle of this trip for the weekend in the middle? I.e. A trip within a trip.

It's not really to get around any fares or anything, just to get away.

Of course, I want to earn miles and segments for this weekend trip... Which is only being planned because I've got nothing else better to do on the weekend then go visit a friend in a nearby city.

Yes, unless your "middle" trip is back to your originating city AND your original fare required a Saturday night stay AND the "middle" trip eats up all the Saturday night stays from the original trip.

If you just want to go somewhere else, you're OK. I've done this myself.

I've even done a trip where I've connected through my original city. I've never done a stopover in my original city, though. That might be a marginal case.

If your midde trip was over the one Saturday night during your long trip and the long trip ticket required a Saturday stay you could always use another airline for it. Then you wouldn't be breaking any rules.

Is there a published rule about this? I am amazed that CO wouldn't just smile and take the $$$$$ for the second trip.

i've done this in the past.. I used IAD-IAH-LAX and back.. I bought a discount fare requiring a Sat night stay well (2 months) in advance.. the duration was for two weeks...

About a month prior to taking the trip, I saw a CO fare sale LAX-IAD for some dirt cheap amount. Since I wanted to rack up some EQM's and go home as well.. I booked it for a Friday departure/Sunday return.

CO never said a word..

I felt that since I bought these tickets a month apart, I was not cirucumventing any rules b/c of the timing of the purchase. My arguement (whether its true or a lie would be the same) would be something came up.. I had to go back.. you happen to have a fare sale.. and I bought it.. my arguement would have also been I would have bought a ticket at ANY price (for the middle weekend trip) due to circumstances unknown at the time.. I am not a lawyer but I'd like to think that this would hold up in court as not circumventing the rules.

I have done exactly that many times with many airlines, and I have never had any problems. Just do it.

Think of it this way. A company sends its top salesman from EWR to LAX for a month. Does anyone think that CO has the authority to tell him or anyone else that he can't go anywhere else from LAX before he comes back to EWR???????? CO would be out of business instantly.
