757/CO

interesting article that i just came across
it suggests we should blame CO for the shut down of the 757 line

Enjoy the 737's transcons while we have them, as CO will likely force us to take the EWR-IAH-LAX route using RJ's in the future.

alright, i'll bite.

"757/CO" what?

oh, continental's to blame for this plane going down the tubes.

i couldn't tell that from the Topic title. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Well, the six 757s that CO converted to 738s were then picked up by a Chinese airline.

However, these looked to be the last orders for this plane in the near future, and keeping the line alive in the face of possibly no new orders for years just doesn't make sense for Boeing.

Enough 757s are in service to meet any future needs (though airlines that don't need them selling them to airlines that do) and the A321/737-800 are a better match for current reduced pax loads than the 757-200 (much less 757-300).

Well, for Gordo this is a no-brainer. In addition to the current IAD-IAH-PSP on ERJ-XRs there will be many more exciting routes coming in the next few years, such as BOS-IAH, EWR-DFW and CLE-MCO on those jungle things http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

The big question is: what will CO fly to Brussels/Lisbon? My bet is either on a ERJ-XXR refueling base (top secret construction going on now) in Greenland or some secretive KC air tanker mid-air refueller purchases by CO in the next few years! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

'Continental Airlines announces increased service between EWR and LAX; the new flights will operate with ERJ. In other, unrelated news, the airline will be parking a bunch of mainline aircraft.'

The next time you board a Boeing (NYSE: BA - News) 757 to fly somewhere, consider asking the crew or a friendly fellow passenger to take a photo of you on the plane as you wipe a tear with your hankie. The plane won't be gone tomorrow, but it has just taken the first step toward extinction ... Those angry and wishing to lash out might do so against Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL - News). Continental, the fifth-largest U.S. air carrier, had placed 11 of the 18 orders for 757s. It recently told Boeing that it was canceling six of the orders, and will instead order 737-800s.

What a bad article!

Lash out at the airline that brought you the 21st century 757 flights to Europe? - I believe most pax would rather see the ETOPS 757 dissapear from CO fleet as soon as possible (or diverted into domestic BF routes).

Blame CO for cancelling 6 orders? - so if they did not cancel this, the plane production line will shut down in 4 months, not now. Blame Boeing for not selling the plane!. Airbus has an excellent copycat in the A321. How are they doing with sales lately?

Take your picture in the 757? - well, 727s and 737-200s keep flying way after their production lines were shut down.

Ah the memories. I was (only by happenchance) on what Eastern Airlines told us was the inaugural scheduled 757 run. It was ATL-MIA sometime in 1982 and we were given souvenir medals and baseball caps to mark the event.

From seat 2A I thought that the new plane was quite OK and then one day I had to ride in the back. I do believe that in the intervening years, I have always been able to avoid ever again traveling in coach on a 757, altho it took a battlefied promotion to get me out of 32C on a new 300 last spring and, for lack of other availability, I have now booked a holidays trip from PBI on Song.

I still have the medal, having noticed it in one of my drawers the other day, but years ago I gave the hat to a little boy on the beach at Barbados.

Good riddance!

The 757 is NOT a passenger's plane, it's a pilot's plane. It's the Corvette of Boeing's fleet.

But who wants to be the passengers riding in the back seat of a sports car.

The 757 have to have the smallest seats, and the 3/3 config is the worst! I wish the 767 was still strong....lost of isle and window seats, just one middle per row! Big, roomy, comfortable.

I agree 100%, 757 it the CO cattle car. Give me a 738 over that 752 anyday!

I will be happy to see that 757 replaced with a 738, but then again, it may get replaced with a RJ135.... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Why the rage against the 757? In general, I find them to be no different from the 737. Personally I like the 757 because it's got more F seats and therefore I have more chance at an pgrade.

If you can get into First, they're nice since most (all?) airlines board through 2L so plenty of time to get settled and served without pax passing through (like 737/Airbii).

But if not, while seat width and pitch are as poor as the 737, and most 757s come with video, which 737s do not, they take a while to load and unload due to their longer size, so if you are crammed back in Economy, you get to "enjoy" it for that much longer. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Mind you, I find even 9C on the UA 757 hellish, even with no seat in front of me, cause I am just wedged into that 17" wide seat. I've sat in 31" Economy minus many a time on those planes, and since that equals CO's product, I can understand why so many CO flyers despise these planes with a passion. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

The ratio of F/Y seats on the 757 is 1:6.625 compared to the 737-800's 1:10 http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/eek.gif

So other than the fact that there are a few more rows of seats, the seats and aisles in Y are the same. I still fail to understand what all the fuss is about. At least all the 757s have IFE.

So between these three, which has the best chance of upgrading?

SFO-> EWR
Sunday afternoon at 4:10 p.m. on a 73G
Sunday evening at 9:10 p.m. on a 738
or Sunday evening at 9:55 p.m. on a 757?

Thanks.
