Bump Question
I searched for this, but couldn't find the answer, so...
I've got a flight from PDX-EWR-DCA on CO coming up soon. The EWR-DCA segment is showing 2-4 seats left - 2 if I check the etour site with a PDX-DCA search & 4 if I do a EWR-DCA search. My flight from PDX leaves around 8AM local PDX time and arrives around 4:45 EWR time. The 5:45 flight from EWR-DCA that I'm scheduled for is the questionable flight. I would happily take a bump to a later flight if they are oversold that morning (next week) for the EWR-DCA segment, but I would like to offer to do this in Portland. Once I'm ticketed, I essentially have the seat & and the people that will be offered the bump would be be the EWR-DCA fliers. My question is whether or not I can request a bump for the EWR-DCA flight from PDX if they oversell. The later flight has plenty of seats left. My flight is CO485 PDX-EWR & CO2560 EWR-DCA on the 4th of August. Thanks! |
I've never seen CO offer a bump a at a remote station. Talk to the GA at EWR. Just because you have a boarding pass with seat assignment doesn't mean you won't be offered the bump. The GA's process bumps for domestic flights at the gate.
Your flight is showing Y0, so bumping is a possibility. This is a high-volume business traveler's flight based on the route and time of day, so expect people to have switched tickets to earlier/later flights. At the same time, if they do indeed need bumps, don't expect the DCA business types (they'll be wearing suits, you'll know) to get up and volunteer for a voucher, so I don't think it'll be that competitive. |
Thanks - I'll try checking with the GA at EWR & at check-in at PDX, but you're right, I doubt the PDX person will be able to do it.

This DC-based Bump-a-holic sees Y0 a LOT on DCA flights... inbound and outbound... IAH, EWR, CLE, even MEM, DTW, and MSP.
But, -never- have I been bumped from DCA. That doesn't mean it never happens. The idea of "business types" not showing up at DCA or going to DCA is the unmistakable DEFINITION of the 'no-show-factor.' ...Especially with all the fickle, federal government folks flying on unrestricted full-fare (albeit negotiated) tickets. For your sake, though, I'm pulling for you! Please report back! |
If you have status with CO (Silver, Gold, Plat), you can have PDX put you on the bump list. If you don't have status, then the PDX agent will tell you to wait until you are at EWR.
I took a trip over the 4th of July to YHZ (LAX-CLE-EWR-YHZ) and they told me that they couldn't put my name on the volunteer list at LAX because I had no status on CO. I learn new things every day. Not like that on UA & US. |
BumpMe - the flight is EWR-DCA, not DCA-EWR. I'll let you guys know what happened when I get back. You were at the FT thing at Potowamak Landing, right?
Chemist - I've got the "temporary" Silver Elite with CO, but I'm planning on earning my miles on NW (going for "real" silver on NW) - I'll see if the fact that I'm a CO Silver will help me out at all. Thanks for the tip! [This message has been edited by bhatnasx (edited 07-30-2003).] |

What I shoul dhave more clearly stated is that it's often Y0 -out of- AND -in to- DCA. Yet, my bump-luck has been awful because of no-shows! |
just checked it again & everything is looking great! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif
now on the pdx-ewr segment, they've only got a few first class seats & y-below is sold out! This may be a possibility for a bump on both ends! wish me luck! i'll let you guys know what happened & whether it worked on monday night! |
Good luck!

speaking of bumps, some stations give priority to elites while others don't.
in houston over christmas 2002, i was given a bump from Houston to Honolulu. i was about sixth to go up to the counter and only two spots were needed. they took me (platinum) and my friend (gold) due to our elite statuses. i have also received preferential treatment on the list at Newark. was in San Juan about two months ago and wasn't given any list preference whatsoever. i think the official policy is that there isn't preference. but, other airlines (united, i believe?) do give elites the edge on the list. Well it didn't work out - wasn't a bad trip though - basically, i got upgraded to F on the way out & the way back (160 RT, in F both ways, can't complain!) & on the way back, I sat next to Vincent D'Nofrio (spelled wrong, i know - the detective from Law & Order) and we had to be diverted to syracuse for 5 hours because of the weather in EWR - missed the flights & had to spend the night in a hotel & caught an flight back this AM - I offered to be put on the list if need be & they didn't need any volunteers - there was only 1 empty seat on the plane - they were oversold by 4 according to the GA.
Oh well, maybe next time! |
