they won't let me choose seats nor will they assign me seats for co 861 on sunday, july 20, 2003--this is boston to newark and then a change in newark to cleveland--have seats on non-stop outbound and on newark to cleveland return--what might be the reasons--several calls have given me several different answers--"the airport is controlling the flight," "they might be changing equipment," "the flight is not sold out"--what do you think?

There are open seats on that flight (7/20 BOS-EWR 861), so you should be able to change them. "Changing equipment" sounds plausible because they essentially freeze the plane while they shuffle equipment. I've seen that before.

Just give it some time, and try again in the morning.
