getting to iceland? how?
I'm going to london next summer on the virgin codeshare, booked with CO miles. I want to visit iceland (specifically, rejkavik) on that trip.
I don't believe this is possible with CO or any CO partner, but I thought I'd ask if anyone knows about carriers or good fares to iceland? |
Too bad you didn't try IcelandAir. They offer a free stopover in Iceland on the way to many European cities.

I believe SAS also offers flights into Iceland, and they are a member of Star Alliance, so you may consider cashing in UA miles on a future trip.
Now.... relating to Continental: You can "launder" up to 25K Continental miles via Amtrak into a UA account per year-- do this once in 2002, and again in early 2003, and you can essentially use your Continental miles to fly to Iceland next year. The Continental-Amtrak-United conversion is 1 to 1, so 50K Continental miles will net 50K United miles. [This message has been edited by Viajero Joven (edited 02-10-2003).] |
Go Fly -- a UK low-frills carrier that was just swallowed by Easyjet (another similar carrier) offered seasonal service from (I believe) STN a year or so ago. You may want to check them out in a few months (they don't list this now).
A list of airlines that fly into Keflavik can be found here: http://www.keflavikairport.com/airlines.html Rejkavik is a WONDERFUL town. We took Icelandair. Their service was great! |
Iceland Air is an Amtrak partner, here's an offer for Amtrak program members, maybe it would be possible to launder CO miles through Amtrak for tickets to Iceland from Europe.
It should be possible to get Amtrak points flying Iceland Air and transfer them to CO subject to the 25,000 mile per year limit. http://www.icelandair.com/amtrakrewards |
You can use your CO Miles to fly to London Gatwick (maybe have a short stopover in London) and fly from London Heathrow to Reyjavik.
Alternatively, if you've done London before, fly London to Glasgow (there are some really low fares on British Airways) spend a few days in Scotland and fly Glasgow to Reyjavik. Look at www.icelandair.com www.britishairways.com Whatever you decide - have a good time! Iceland's on my wish list too! |
SAS hasnt been flying to KEF for years. Icelandair is the only main carrier who flies to KEF.

i think ill be buying my iceland tix for cash, since i used my miles for the virgin (upperclass) tix.
it's sorta a bummer that these virgin tix, which i had considered a highlight of the trip as they are very hard to get, are less convienient than perhaps cheap icelandair stopover tickets. getting from LON -> KEF is quite expensive, perhaps i'll have to do iceland on another trip http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif |
Icelandair has some really good deals from the states, I often see like $199 or $249 from MSP, JFK, BWI, MCO, BOS to cities in Europe and I think they normally allow stopovers in KEF--The fares to KEF aren't that bad either. You can sign up for their webfares at www.icelandair.com
Enjoy the UK while you're there, and plan another trip when you can get a cheapo fare from SFO to an Icelandair gateway city and go from there--I hope to do it someday too. |
If this link works, it take you to a Consolidator who generally offers big discounts on Icelandair, however, they mostly pertain to onward travel to Europe after a stopover. Iceland protects its home market (there are only 250,000 residents), so outside of SAS codeshares, charters, and the occasional seasonal flight from discounters in Europe, they are just about the only game in town. Even so, the last 2 years, they have suspended service to New York in the winter months. Service is on 757 aircraft, configured more or less like a domestic flight in the US. They also frequently run 2 for 1 deals in conjunction with MasterCard.
