Earlier this year I ran into this situation. Flight was completely sold out in Y, but most of F was open. Since we were unable to secure seat assignments in Y, we 3 Golds went to the airport early. Checked in about 3:20 prior. While checking in, agent was able to secure us 1 F seat, then the system locked her out. Other two were told to standby for seats at gate and waitlisted for upgrades. Finally called to podium for 2 Y seats, I asked what happened. Seems that everyone else had upgraded ahead of us, including several non-revs. I took my seat in F, sent kids back to Y. Wonderful gate agent boarded, yanked two non-revs from F and went back to tell my girls they had a "special secret assignment" in F. This was a very special gate agent! Don't think this will be an issue with you, unless you are more than 1 person on the itinerary.. BUT if you check in prior to 3 hr EUA, and agent is unable to upgrade you, I would advise to decline checkin until the EUA has run. The angel gate agent told me that nobody even checked to see if there WAS a waitlist, assuming that all Elites had gone up during EUA, and the remaining seats were assigned to companions and non-revs at gate.

Here is my follow-up to my EUA upgrade and what happened today the day of flight: I have a 5:15 p.m flight IAD-IAH that I am waiting for A2 F0 on.
1:45PM (3.5 hour window) A2F0 2:10PM (3 hrs 5 minutes) A2F0 2:20PM (2 hours 55 mintues) A0F0; 2:22PM No email for EUA; so then I check my itin on CO and the seat map which shows 2 open seats in F; previously it was showing my seat in Y at 6D; so I'm guessing I got upgraded but not sure; 2:35PM EUA email comes through but without a seat assignment; I call OP to grab the one aisle seat left and they say the seats are airport restricted so I have to go to the airport to get a seat assignment Thats it folks; that is how it seemed to work for me today Edited to add; I arrived at IAD; did the kiosk check in; tried to change my seat and could not. However I took my seat 3A on a 735 and the seat next to me 3B was empty as was 3C; In the end 3C stayed empty and 3B was filled by the Red Coast with someone from Y [This message has been edited by TrojanHorse (edited 11-22-2002).] |

Yeah, I rarely (if ever) get a seat assignment in a 3h EUA.

While planning my last trip EWR-LAS I noticed they hold back way more A seats on Friday night than other nights of the week. ITN showed A9F0 right up until day of departure and seat map showed 11 empty seats in first. On our Tuesday return the diff between A and F was about 4 seats and I got EUA'd 5 days out.
