How many miles?
 

This question is targeted to CO flyers -
How many miles should one keep in ones OP account? I'm approaching 275,000 and I'm not sure how wise it is to keep so many.

My question to you is why are you saving them? Do you plan an F class international trip for a group/family or do you just never find time to use them? I certainly wouldn't be saving them for plans of your retirement if that is in the distant future.

As much as I love watching my point balance climb and get a little sad when I cash out and see the lower balance, any thoughts of lower mileage balances evaporate when I am enjoying a fantastic trip someplace far away knowing that it didnt cost me any more than the tax.

It depends on your confidence level - however once they are in your account there is no economical way to move them to another carrier -

The best option is th Use the Miles for air travel.

You can still move them at a one to one ratio to Amtrak and then to UA.

My suggestion is for you guys to burn a few miles- especially if you can get seats at the current 20K domestic US online booking level!

The transfer to UA is a good idea if there are no seats to your destination on a given date- UA tends to have much better availability, in my opinion. Of course, don't transfer too many miles or else you might be sorry when UA plows into the ground http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I have about 350K OP miles and was trying to save them for a BF trip to Europe next year. But after reading about everyone having no luck with reward tix, I have started to use them for upgrades on hard to EUA trips. But that only works when rev mgmt puts some of the A bucket into the F bucket. It is getting impossible from EWR to LAX unless you take the 1st flight out on the weekend.
