skip a flight leg and drive instead
 

i was wondering if there are any negative consequence of skipping my flight leg from slc to LAX. I have a round trip from ATL to LAX via SLC. Are there any issues with just skipping slc to LAX instead and drive to LAX. Rest of the trip remains same. Please advice..J

I am 99% sure that if you miss a portion of your trip the itin is canceled.

Advice: Post this in the Delta forum, since it sounds like you're on a DL itinerary. ;)

Seriously... this would be considered "throw-away ticketing", and is frowned on by the airlines. The rest of your itn would be cancelled.

if I have a one way ticket from ATL to LAX via slc. and skip the second leg of first one way. I can always buy a one way back from LAX to ATL.l Will I be fine?

If you are using one way tickets on seperate itins you should be fine.

They WILL CANCEL the rest of your travel plans. I suggest not doing such a thing..

Many years ago, an airline service desk employee advised me (in such a situation) to go to the ticket or service counter and inform them that your plans have changed and you will be using ground transportation for your next leg. Ask them to not cancel your return flight. Of course, get some sort of confirmation.

I have a very similar problem. I currently have a flight on continental from LA to stockholm, with a stop in newark. I've recently decided that on the way back to LA I want to stop and stay in newark for a couple days. Changing my reservation would cost about $300-400. It would be a lot cheaper to buy a one way ticket from newark to LA. Is it possible to just purposely miss the last leg (newark to LA)? Assuming I had no checked luggage, does anybody see any problems with this plan?

Your plan will probably not cause you any problems unless you are determined by the revenue protectors to be a repeat offender. This is reputed to be triggered by an analysis of your OnePass statements, so if you aren't using a OnePass number, they will never bother you and you can go your merry way.
Even using an OP#, over the years I have done this a few times with no consequences. At EWR I dropped the last leg of a trip that was supposed to finish in PHL and more than once have taken a ride home from DC without using the return leg of a deeply discounted RT EWR-DCA-EWR. Nothing ever came of those and, believe it or not, I even was credited with the miles for that EWR-PHL RJ that I never boarded.

This will work even if you do have checked luggage, as you have to clear customs at EWR and claim/recheck your luggage there for the onward flight.

As far as future problems are concerned, if you do this kind of thing repeatedly the airline could come after you (or your travel agent) with a bill for what you actually flew vs. what you purchased. This almost never happens.

The best tip is to clear it with the airline!! I have just had clients who flew to Santiago (Chile) where they were supposed to connect to Mendosa (Brazil) The transcontinental flight was a bit late so they missed their conection - the next flight would only be a 9 that evening so they decided to take the bus over the Andes. There was no problem with coming back via plane however they did clear it with the airline first!
