Exempt from EUA When 2+ Pax on Same PNR?

I'm flying SEA-EWR-MHT shortly with my seven-year-old son... booked in Economy, of course. I don't really want EUA to kick in for me alone because I obviously don't want to be separated from him... and he has no CO status (yet). If it happens I don't want the hassle of nailing down two Y seats together by the window right there at the gate. (Small boy needs window.) I either need us both upgraded at the airport, or kept together in the back of the bus.

Anyone had any luck opting OUT of the EUA derby for reasons like this?

If I call will

Among the numerous threads discussing EUA's when traveling with lower elites or non-elites:

The short answer is that the only way to opt out of this situation is to call CO and have them remove your OP number from the record. Thus, EUA will bypass you. You can then try at the airport for a Platinum and companion upgrade and have them enter your OP number at the airport.

There's a no-eua flag that can be put in your PNR on a segment by segment basis.

i think you all are missing the fact that they are on the same PNR. yes, in theory you can tell CO that you don't want to upgrade. however, since bearX220 is travelling with someone who has no status, the defualt alone will keep EUA from processing.

my understanding is that EUA always defaults to the lowest status. for example, mrs duxfan and i have to be on seperate records now because i would default to her silver status, rather than get my plat upgrade. my understanding is that EUA will not split a record to upgrade, and will not automatically upgrade a companion.

bearX220, i don't think you'll have to do anything in order to wait til the airport and try for the upgrades.

Yes, exactly.

I thought the rules said that you'd be upgraded within the "slot" of the lowest ranking person on the itinerary. (stated a little differently). Since the son wouldn't be upgraded, she wouldn't be, either, right?

Right, so if an elite (regardless of status) is on the same PNR as a non-elite, nobody gets upgraded until you ask at check-in.

Duxfan and dbaker, I believe you're right and that's exactly the wisdom I was looking for. Thanks very much.

Oh, and Colombiano, I'm a he, not a she... dads fly with their kids too!

I'm so sorry... my bad! That's the product of me having too many windows open at one time and confusing details - not being narrowminded. Again, so sorry. Safe and Happy travels! wcd
