Qantas Reward Problem/Question
Last Sept booked a Qantas reward using onepass miles for travel this April. I booked the flight in 1st. When the paper tickets were sent to me, I checked my onepass account and saw they only took out the miles for a business class ticket.
I called back to see what happened. They told the I had booked it in 1st and they by mistake CO only took out the business class reward miles. They put me on hold- then came back and told me since it was their mistake- they were not going to take out the additional miles for the 1st award and they would note it on my reservation. I was happy they were not going to ding me for the extra miles! Well, I got to thinking and looked at the paper tickets- the fare class on the ticket for my trip is Z but after calling Qantas- they tell me my reservation is for 1st. So what do you think is going to happen when I try to check in at LAX for 1st and my ticket clearly states Z class. (I'm pretty sure Z is an business award class). What should I do? |
You need the expert.

Z is first reward of QF, U is business.
QF website allows you to search for both Z and U availability, but is slow. ExpertFlyer.com will let you search for these fairly quickly, but costs $5/mo. |

Call Qantas USA Reservations and get your Qantas record locator. Then, go to www.checkmytrip.com and enter your locator and last name. You can expand out the details of each segment, and it will tell you exactly where you're booked. Note - this site is authorititative for the QF segments only. It may have connecting OAL segments which may or may not display correctly. Another note, while you're at it, when on the phone with QF, get them to issue you seat assignments if you haven't done so already. Enjoy your trip! |
Thanks channa!!!!!! :)

Since Z is the same code letter as a BF ticket on CO, when CO prints out the paper ticket - the itineray card (first card) will type out as Business Class since CO computers are picking up the title from the Z class look up. Rest assured that you will be in First for Z class. The key is the code on the actual flight coupon - the class should show Z class for LAX to SYD (for example) and the status should be OK. Australia domestic flight coupons will show U for QF. Your CO flights should show "E" if you are in CO FC, and "M" if you are in CO domestic coach. Might check those to make sure CO put you in FC for the domestic flights. If it shows M, be prepared to fly CO coach - while they say you will be waitlisted - it will never clear. I have done this 10 times. Also, call QF and get your itinerary number and do your seat assignment. You also need to get an Australia electronic VISA. You used to be able to call QF to get the VISA, but now they charge you for it. Best to call CO desk and have them get the VISA - last time CO did not charge for that service. |

eta.immi.gov.au There is a fee if you go direct as indicated. The airlines can get it for you. You give them you Passport number and it takes about 24-48 hours. CO will do it as a courtesy - no fee - the last several times I have done it. QF now charges if you go through them. If you go through QF it will show up in QF computers. If you go through CO it will show up in CO computers, but not QF computers. However, once approved no matter which of the three ways you go, when you check in at the QF counter, they will enter your USA passport number and pull it out of the VISA database. |
Agree and confirm with all above. I've ticketed six first class QF tickets using CO miles, and in each case first class international is Z. You're fine.
Channa's suggestion of how to pull your locator is a good one, although the Tucson QF rez center will often email you or fax you your QF printed booking, if you cartch them at a good time & are polite. They aren't supposed to do it, but I've never left the USA without my QF printout, yet, in six tickets worth of first class... |
Is it possible to obtain 2 QF tickets in First to Sydney from the states on the same flight?
I remember checking a few times over a several month timespan as far in advance as was possible, and I could not book anything. |

I have be able to get 2 QF FC rewards on the same flight - 3 different times, both before and after they reconfigured the FC cabin. The old QF FC was 16 seats, 2 rows of 4 with a buffet against the wall. The reconfigured cabin is 14 seats. 4 singles on each side and 3 pairs of two in the middle.
I have gotten 2 FC tickets on flights LAX-SYD, but have also gone LAX-MEL. If you are connecting in Australia to go to another city, say PER, then I find MEL a better connection. At MEL the International Terminal is right next to the domestic terminal - so you just walk next door. At SYD you need to go to a transfer area, recheck-in, then get on a bus (always backed up) and take the trip to the domestic terminal. Both the MEL and SYD domestic lounges have great shower facilities - if you are continuing on. |
