Fare Class Mileage Bonus Question
 

I flew BF IAH-HNL-IAH on a D class ticket and the fare bonus miles appeared only for the return, but not the outbound. (I paid $200 to upgrade an H ticket to D since mileage upgrade wasn't available) On the OP page, it showed the following:

7/3/01 Air CONTINENTAL 0002 D
HNL IAH 3917
SILVER ELITE BONUS 1958
FARE BONUS 1958 7833

6/27/01 Air CONTINENTAL 0073 XD
IAH HNL 3917
SILVER ELITE BONUS 1958 5875

Is there a difference between D and XD after the respective flight number? Is that why the fare bonus doesn't show up for 73? I would think I should get the fare bonus for both ways... Thanks in advance!

The X is specifically to prevent the OP computer from giving you the fare bonus for the flight. The bonus is not meant to apply to upgraded flights.

More specifically, the $200 upgrade from coach to BusinessFirst on the HNL routes doesn't really upgrade your ticket to a BF ticket - it upgrades your coach ticket to allow seating in the BF cabin much like an AllPass mileage upgrade award would.

If you upgraded your H ticket to D by paying the full difference in fare, then you'd get the fare bonus, because you'd truely have a paid BF ticket.

And, of course, don't call them! You've gotten a bonus that you aren't entitled to (and more power to ya') but don't call it to their attention, obviously.

Thanks for the info. I went from feeling mildly screwed and in for a hassle with OPSC to get the bonus miles to getting a "steal".

I guess separately but part of the same trip, and pardon the novice question, is there usually a bonus for a Y fare segment? I've got the XY on my Hobby hop... I'm puzzled.

There used to be such a bonus several years ago, but this has not been the case recently.

The way things are going for the airlines this year, the Y fare bonus may make a comeback.
