BF 757 vs 777

I'm planning a trip to England/Ireland and was wondering if there any major difference between the seats in the 777 vs the 757. I'm trying to decide between LGW and BHX on the outbound. I've flown BF in the 777 but not the 757. Any opinions http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif out there

I haven't flown on a 777, but BF on a 757 seems the same to me as BF on a DC10. I suspect that it's almost the same on all aircraft, except I believe the 777 has larger lavs in BF.

iwant;

Technically speaking there is very little difference, the seats are the same (minus the powerports on 757-- which make a big difference to me, but not many others) and all the "specs" of the seats are similar; pitch, recline, etc.

IMHO, however I find that there is a big difference in practice. The 777 "feels" so much roomier and the fact that it's a widebody means you can sort of get up and do some laps around the cabin, if you like to do that.

Again, it's just MY opinion, but I have a strong preference for the 777 BF cabin. If you are the type who get's on a plane and falls right asleep, the differences in entertainment options/overall cabin "feel" will matter much less, if at all.

Just my personal preference-- I might even alter my itinerary to get on a 777BF-- but not many normal folks would.

I completely agree with the comments by JonNYC.

I have flown BusinessFirst on both aircraft and I believe the seats themselves are the same. The 757 BF cabin is configured 2-2 and the 777 is 2-2-2. I definitely prefer the 777 due to its feeling of spaciousness, both perceived and actual. What a difference the 777 makes.

I do enjoy the 757 BizFirst also. They're both fine products. Enjoy!

The 757 seat is indeed essentially the same as the 777; however, the entertainment systems are a generation apart. The 757 uses the same system as the DC-10, with relatively few movie choices. The 777/767 system is GREAT, with multiple choices (13 I believe) and 6 video games. If that is important, you would want to consider the 777. But, as mentioned on this site all the time, if you are going to attempt an upgrade to fly BF, be prepared, be very prepared. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Do the 757's have individual screens like the 777's or is it one screen for the entire cabin?

The 757's do have individual screens (at least in BusinessFirst). The screen is the same size as those on the 777's. However, the available programming is different.

On the 757 and DC-10, the programming for BF passengers is "multi-cycle." You have a choice of 6 or so movies on the first cycle, and a different choice of the same number of movies on the second cycle.

On the 777, you have 16 different movie channels. But, the movie on each channel is the same on each cycle. There will be 2, 3, or 4 cycles, depending on the length of the flight.

I would definitely opt for the 777. The 757 BusinessFirst is nice and the seats about the same, but the 777 is just more roomier and gives you a more comfortable feeling. As JonNYC said, I too would alter my itinerary just to get on one - or any widebody for that matter.

JonNYC Jun 16, 2001 10:09 am

Gee, and I thought I was nuts. I do think that if you've only been on 777, 767 BF that when you get on a 757 in BF you'll look around and go "ugh, it doesn't really "feel" like first class" (and of course it isn't a true first class, but I find on a widebody, it's always comfortable enough for me.) I also prefer DC10 BF to 757 BF also, but wouldn't change my schedule to get one

But ya know-- it's all relative. On a recent BF flight to HKG, I sat near a mega-super-frequent flyer. I didn't get a figure out of him but I get the feeling he flies over 250,000 miles a year, usually on United. When we were chatting-- and after he got over the initial queasiness induced by my telling him that my ticket was $1000 (his was over $4000.,) He was telling me how "crappy" the service and seats were on our 777 BF.

He was, of course, used to travelling in a true First Class product from NY-Asia and only bought a BF ticket because the savings was over $3000 compared to United FC.

Now on this particular flight, service was a bit sub-par compared to my other BF flights this year-- but still decent. He regaled me with tales of a genuine FC product and I understood where he was coming from as I had been on a few FC flights NY-Europe in previous years. As a side note he had never even heard of FT-- and in my experience that's not at all uncommon. Oh well, more for us!

So, the real answer is: any BF is better than no BF, but I guess many (maybe most?) here do feel that the 777 ads quite a bit to the "experience." When I went to Lisbon earlier this year I flew out of MAD on the way home just to get away from the 757-- but as I mentioned, I'm a little nuts.

Needless to say if your trip is going to involve waitlisting for BF on any leg, the 777 offers a very tangible advantage in it's sheer number of BF seats. Plus, you never know when you'll really luck out and get an empty seat next to you on a BF 777 flight http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cool.gif...

I seem to recall the CO website showing a 12" seat recline on DC10 and 757 BFs, but 15" on the 777s and 767s. I've flown all but the 767s, but never close enough in time to really compare the difference.

One difference I do notice is that the footrest seems to be sturdier on the 777 seats.

Also, the cappuccino on the 777s (and 767s) is a nice benefit!

JonNYC Jun 16, 2001 6:59 pm

The DC-10 in BF has 1 inch less recline than the 777, 767 BF. Not really noticeable.

Same goes for the 757 BF.

Another small difference is that the 777 BF seats (and presumably the 767) have a reading lamp built into them, on a gooseneck stalk. This is of course in addition to the standard overhead reading lamp, which is the only option on the DC-10 and 757.

Regarding in-flight telephone service, do the 757 and DC-10 have satellite capability?

I don't quite know how to quantify it, but I have to agree with the other posters in that the 777 BusinessFirst experience is much better than the 757 (of course) and the DC-10. It's more psychological than anything else, but it just seems better. Maybe what Boeing says about the design of the cabin isn't all smoke and mirrors after all. One thing that always strikes me about the 777 is how fresh they smell inside. In addition to being much newer than the DC-10's, they've also never been smoked in, which I think has something to do with it.
