Buying separate flight segments
 

Another interesting question. What is everyone's take on buying 2 separate flights versus ticketing all the way through. I was thinking since I had two discount coupons I could buy two separate flights, both on Continental, and use both coupons. Example PBI to EWR, then EWR to Europe. What are the positives and negatives of doing this?

If you can find a better fare, it may be a good deal to do it. However, there are logistical problems. If your flight out of PBI is delayed, you may miss your flight in EWR and if it's on a separate itinerary, it won't be protected and you'd be regarded as a no-show. Same problem on the return. Could end up costing you more or delaying your trip significantly.

It's a time-honored play with potential pitfalls like what dbaker mentioned. Airlines hate it and may even say it's against the rules, but it's 100% legal, as well it ought to be. I saved well over $200 by breaking an ATL-HNL into ATL-LAX and LAX-HNL separate tickets a couple of years ago.
