CO in FLL....
Anyone know about the expansion at FLL looks like CO will have 7 of the 9 new gates being bulit.
Focus city? RJ hub? Any one have Ideas? See: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/dai...112432,00.html or http://www.herald.com/content/today/...ocs/054399.htm BSL |
Additionally, Continental has announced plans to open a President's Club in Fort Lauderdale in the 1Q of next year.

As I live just 3 1/2 miles from FLL, I can't wait for the new terminal (although seeing it almost every day, I knew there was no way they'd meet the "late 2000" completion date).
And the confirmation of the P Club in 1Q01 is even better news http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif - but to be honest I'll do anything to avoid the fourth-world zoo that is MIA http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/eek.gif |
It would have been good to have the new terminal open for the winter travel season.
FLL is a popular destination from EWR & IAH. Combined with CO Connection routes to Bahamas & Key West, this would make a good feeder location. I'm excited, because I fly into FLL for business in Miami, because MIA is worse than airports in most Third World Countries. Really, it's bad. Especially for car renting. ------------------ He who dies with the most miles, is dead. |
That FLL expansion is well needed and deserved. It should help accommodate the heavy CO traffic at FLL. Did someone say the addition of a Presidents Club? That's music to my ears, http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Jack Daniels, if you please!

Personally I would have preferred to see a the beginings of a hub in Palm Beach, but I'm very happy to see this at FLL.
I usually have 4 or 5 trips to PBI and 2 or 3 to FLL a year. I guess I'll be flying into FLL more and PBI less. I echo the comments about MIA, it's an awful airport. |
I too have half a dozen trips a year to South Florida and have always used whichever of the three airports showed the best fare (my destination is usually in South Broward. The additions in FLL along with the slight geographical advantage of over MIA and the large logistical advantage over PBI will induce this traveller to pay a few dollars extra to go in there all the time.

Quite the contrary---
Thanks to Southwest, fares into FLL are usually lower than MIA and PBI, especially for poeple not coming from the Northeast. I'm guessing CO forsees traffic growth (and rightly so) and is building to accommodate it. So what's the deal with only 2 daily CLE-FLL flights, anyway?!?! And only 1 CLE-MIA??? Personally I like MIA a lot-- I'm heading there at the end of Aug to connect with COPA. People watching and airplane watching are much better, and given its purpose as an international gateway, it's not nearly a mess like JFK, LAX, or ORD-- you never have to change terminal buildings or ride a train between connections. FLL is an O-D airport vs. the connecting point that MIA is, so I imagine passenger preferences are different, based on their use of the airport as a destination vs. a connection. Part of the situation with CLE flights is the unique cruise passenger O/D traffic to and from FLL and MIA. Extra sections are added when the boats (Love and otherwise) come back from Alaska for the winter Caribbean season (ever wonder why the extra flights always seem to arrive/leave between 11:00am and 3 http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/tongue.gifm - it's the time the people sailing out arrive and the people who have finished their cruises clear customs amd make it to the airport). I also think that "Mayor Penellas' Punishment Palace" is a hybrid more than a classic connecting hub - while it is true that there's a sizeable amount of Central/South American connecting, I would guess a much greater number are Dade County residents who are fit the O/D description. I would attribute this mostly to plain old geography - MIA's a little too much at the SE corner of the US to make for efficient hub-spoke flying. It's been my personal experience that people I know who live in "deeper" parts of South M-D county almost never choose to utilize the other airports (all other factors being equal), while Broward/PB people are more apt to mix their airport choices (one reason being that many Broward residents work in M-D County and sometimes need to depart directly from the office). Final factor: Area residents are stuck with MIA if they're going over the pond - so more O/D traffic - not too many people from other parts of the US come to MIA to connect to London or Rome or Franfurt etc. |
When I lived in MIA I used to drive to FLL. MIA is not worth the nighmare. I would prefer to travel on DL vs. AA or Virgin anyway, and MIA is just not a fun place to be. It used to be different in the days of Eastern and PanAm, but all airports are different now.

To bring this thread to the top of the list, I saw that CO will be running 2 daily nonstop LGA-FLL on 737s, starting in the winter.
Is this expanded FLL service, or part of CO's master plan to make EWR dominate by strangling LGA in airplanes? |
This makes me both happy and sad. I fly down to PBI at least 10-15 times a year, and a Presidents Club in FLL would make me fly there. West Palm is such a pleasure to fly through. Why can't they just build a club in PBI.........
|
The future plans for expansion of FLL include adding two more concourses to the new terminal that CO will occupy. In addition to that they will be extending the southern runway out over US1 and building a 5th terminal, but that one is years away.
Here is a nice video for those interested http://205.166.161.20:8080/ramgen/bcadvid.rm TW [This message has been edited by Tolarian Wind (edited 08-16-2000).] |
Tute: I agree, I was flying through PBI last week, boy a PC there would have been nice.
Does anyone know when the FLL PC will be opening? |
