Fare Cycles to Honduras
 

Mrs. WT and I are considering a trip to Honduras in May to visit with some friends. I checked prices a week or two ago and there were quite a few tickets available for $400 r/t SLC-TGU; pretty much the same SLC-SAP. I checked again today, and all of a sudden they're $700! That's quite a jump, and I can't believe that CO sold all the seats in that particular fare class all of a sudden (I forgot to check the original fare class since I assumed that the fares would stay constant for a while). Are these fares cyclical at all? Can I expect them to go down between now and May, or are we just SOL? I just can't see spending 700 bucks to fly that relatively short route.

I noticed the same thing to Ecuador. I believe they dropped the fares temporarily to match a sale from one of the Central American carriers, which has since raised its fares. It's hard to tell when they might drop again. You might want to monitor the route via Travelocity, and watch for one carrier to have a sale that CO might match.

You didn't say what the route was.

I apologize. I was looking SLC-TGU, but I'll take SLC-SAP if it's more economically sound.

I keep an eye on Centroamerica fares, and hop on them when they drop.

TACA Airlines has had an Xmas / New Year sale for the past three years, and for some reason CO matched it this year.

Normal IAH-SAP and IAH-TGU fares run about $550 all in. I'm somewhat surprised that it's that much higher from SLC, because CO tends to have LOWER prices from flights originating at airports that connect via IAH, those so called hidden cities.

I'd just keep an eye on the fares, because I'm convinced that they cannont go any higher (famous last words), and expect that on these not very popular routes they will come to a more reasonable prices. BTW, if you have time, you can add SAL to the mix, there's excellent luxury bus service between San Salvador, Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula.

Thanks, I'll look at SAL, too. How difficult is it to cross the border? I've seen some cautionary notes in that regards, but I don't have any experience with traveling in Central America.

don't have first hand experience, but it should not be too difficult. Here's the bus service I used on some of my travels from SAP about a year ago. I think there's another bus line that also serves SAN-SAP, but I would not swear to it.
