Need Help to Read ITN code
 

New to this bulletin board. Can someone explain to me the code on the ITN site (for upgrade purpose). Thak you.

In order to look for upgradeable seats, your ITN preference must be set to Advanced.

Once you have done this, flights will show availability by class (A7 D7 F7 Y7 H7...). The class of service that you are concerned with is F. CO will allow an upgrade if an F seat is open, but not an A seat.

I booked a ticket from ORD to LAX via IAH. I checked with ITN. On March 5, CO 1101 ORD to IAH has 0 F if I choose the connection CO 1667 from IAH to LAX. But if I choose connection CO 1009, there will be 8 F available on CO 1101. Why the same flight CO 1101 show different F seats available? Can someone help me to answer the question?

Bookexp: I believe that the following is the answer to your question but I am not 100% sure.

When you inquiry about a trip that has a connection, ITN only shows what is available for the WHOLE trip. Therefore if one flight is F8 and the other flight is F0, then the combined flight will show F0.

I have found it is always best to to inquiry on every segment individually.

Does that mean I might get the upgrade on the ORD-IAH but not on IAH-LAX?
Another question: if I find an early flight which has first class seats available, can I request stand by upgrade when I call in?

Does the "F" rule work when checking Northwest flights on ITN? Or does NW use another letter for seats that it allows Elite members to recieve upgrades?

From what I have seen , CanadianFlyer's assesment is correct.

When calling for an upgrade, if an F seat is available when you ask AND you are eligible for an upgrade, the seat is yours. I have upgraded one half of an itinerary many times.

I don't think they waitlist anybody over the phone. The waitlist starts at the airport 2 hours before flight time.

I you are using a OnePass reward for the upgrade, you have to ask yourself if the upgrade for One segment is worth 10,000 miles. If you are upgading due to elite status, then get the upgrade as soon as possible.

Either way, keep calling for the other segment. I can't begin to tell you how many times I have been told no the first time I have called and yes, the second or third time.

Yes, NW is F for upgrade seat. NW doesn't hold any seats back for revenue as A seats, as does CO.

By the way, always a good idea to check the A seats even if there are not any F seats open. Gives a decent idea whether first is sold out or how many F seats might become available on the day of departure.

While NW doesn't split its FC seats into "A" and "F" buckets like CO, They still keep a small number hidden and out of the F category. I have twice called CO for an upgrade on a NW flight when ITN showed F=0 and gotten the seat each time. It pays to call.
