44 Min Intl Connection at EWR?

DEC 15 STR-EWR-SFO

Depart:
10:05 a.m.
Sat., 15 Dec., 2012
Stuttgart, Germany (STR)

Arrive:
1:50 p.m.
Sat., 15 Dec., 2012
New York/Newark, NJ (EWR - Liberty

Checked my reservation this morning and they had changed the EWR-SFO segment yet again.
Originally the EWR-SFO was at 4:20, then was changed to 3:15, now it is 2:40 departure.

We will have global entry (new to this). If we carry
on our bags can we make this connection?
I understand we have to clear security at EWR.

No. This is not doable with checked luggage and a very long shot with carry-on. Remember, you must be at your xEWR gate by T-15 or lose your seat. If your flight is overbooked at T-15, you will lose your seat and someone else will be loaded. This saves UA any DB compensation, but gives you 29 minutes from sitting in your seat on the inbound to make it through CBP, Security and out to your departure gate.

If you misconnect, UA will rebook you on the next available flight. But, I stress the word "available" because that's a heavily-booked route. You are far better to have UA rebook you now and know that you have seats than run the close to certainty of misconnecting and fretting about how long you will be stuck at EWR.

If we carry our bags on the STR-EWR flight, can we check them at the post customs recheck area downstairs at ewr? They will need to be tagged.

Maybe I can get them to "protect us" in FC on the next flight, but
I would like to be able to make the connection since it is a PMCO 752 with pods.

According to flightaware, the STR-EWR segment is usually early:

I wouldn't even do this connection on a domestic flight from the same terminal. There's a chance you'll land and sit in a holding spot for several minutes before you even get to the gate. I'd highly suggest calling and having things changed up.

I am hoping that they might change the str ewr segment to a 9:30 departure as it usually is.
I hate to give u p fc seats on a pmco 757 for a pmua 757.

Well, you asked, and the concensus is that it won't work. Period. You should also understand that the chances of F avail. at the last minute on a later flight are pretty slim. You most likely wind up in E- not next to each other, if at all.

Yes, but the flights you are looking at are in mid summer, December on the east coast is another matter (we sometimes do have snow in Dec), also this is a VERY busy time of the day for foreign flights to arrive, so just because it generally lands early, doesn't mean you'll get through customs quickly. If I were you, I'd look to get rebooked on a later SFO flight.

Illegal connection

44 minutes from Intl to domestic at EWR is an "illegal" connection. Likely UA will eventually make the itin change for you. You can also wait and see if schedules change back in your favor, or be proactive and contact the airline.

That PMCO 752 you want to catch could change to another type of aircraft between now and then. Best to get FC seats on a later flight out of EWR (even a 73x) and if by some miracle you show up really early, then make the decison whether you want to stand by for an earlier flight (almost certainly in Y) or wait for your flight.

Thanks...with a few months to go, maybe the schedule/aircraft may change...I'll wait it out a bit.

Add me to the 'don't risk it group'

Last Dec the wife and I flew MAN-EWR-LAS. We checked one bag as far as EWR because MAN security can be fussy about size of carry-ons. We had a two hour connection which dwindled to 60 minutes because of delays.

We were in the first group off the plane. There was no queue at all at passport control (A minor miracle) but it didn't matter much because we still had a 20 minute wait for the checked bag. By the time we got the bag we were less than 30 minutes from take-off.

Dashed for the monorail for B to C. Minimal queue at security but kindfolks let us go ahead (Didn't bother with the priority line). Naturally our gate was 112 at the far end of the spur. We made our way to the gate as quickly as possible but we still missed the 15 minute cut-off time by five minutes or so.

The happy ending was that they hadn't closed the door FA was looking down the terminal and possibly saw us charging down the terminal. I don't know - I didn't ask, I was too out of breath. Possibly the fact we were in First may have helped. Certainly, almost as soon as we were seated they closed the door and we pushed-back on time.

So, if you deduct the 20 minute wait for baggage it took us 40 minutes gate to gate without any holdups at passport control or security.

A connection time through EWR of less than 90 minutes would leave me a bit twitchy.
