Companion March 3 Upgrade Question
 

I'm Elite Gold, and was upgraded today for my flight on March 3. I see on Continental's site that the priority upgrade is as follows:

Elite members with full-fare (Y class) tickets, in Elite tier order
Elite members with full-fare (B class) tickets, in Elite tier order
Platinum Elite members in all other fare classes, in fare class order
Companions of Platinum members
Gold Elite members in all other fare classes, in fare class order
Companions of Gold members
Silver Elites in all other fare classes, in fare class order

It also states: Platinum and Gold companion upgrades may only be requested within two hours of flight departure.
For companions of Platinum and Gold members, the time the member was added to the upgrade standby list will be the determining factor.

My question is, I assume I cannot call in and get them upgraded right away even though per the top order of upgrades, Companions are above silvers.

Also, for 2 hours before departure, do I request this directly at bag check or directly to the gate agents?

UA Insider answered the companion question in the preview to March 3rd thread. In your case, you split the PNR, thus eliminating the new perk of having the companion in your reservation be eligible automatically.

All you can do is ask at check-in at the airport. Not 2 hours - that's an old dead rule.
