EWR-HKG flight # change from 98/99 to 116/117?

A little surprised at this change. They swap from the twice-weekly CNS-GUM flight. Was 98/99 for HKG-EWR for a long time?

They changed at one point - but I have them booked in Nov later this year and they're back to 98/99, so who knows

These flight number changes had been in the schedule for at least for two months now. EWR-HKG flight 117 goes into effect today, HKG-EWR Flight 116 on tomorrow.

Come November, it's back to 98/99 for whatever reason, unless that far out hasn't been changed

Interesting. Do they change it for a reason? I mean, if you don't have the need, why don't you just leave them intact?

Absolutely agree with above, and I don't speak Mandarin or Cantonese, but don't the numbers 98 and especially 99 represent wealth and prosperity to the Chinese?

No. Instead the word for 9 九 sounds the same as the one for longevity 久.

I haven't been on this flight in awhile. Has the IFE(economy) been upgraded to AVOD like CX or the old channel style?

All of CO's 22 772s have nose-to-tail AVOD and power for at least 2 years Decent 9" screens in Y.

Yeah, the digit "9" means longevity, and it is the digit "8" that has loose connections to wealth and prosperity, and hence these flights:

UA888/889, UA898/UA897, UA88/89, UA86/87

Interesting that for UA888 (PEK-SFO), Air China also has a code share on this flight, and their flight number is, lo and behold,

CA8888/CA8889.
