fees to change fare class
 

Does anyone know if there is a way to get fees waived for changing fare class (I'm 1K). I have an SWU I'd like to use, there's R space available, but I'm booked in L, and need to be in W. The difference in fare price is not too bad but there is a whopping change fee on top of it. Any ideas? (It's for travel later today!) :)

Call and ask to up-fare; be polite, and hang up and try again if things aren't working out.

My recollection is that you can upgrade on day of travel if R is available and cannot get onto the upgrade waitlist (or departure-management upgrade list) within 24 hours of travel if R is not available for immediate confirmation. Do I remember right?
