One twist to be aware of - when you are flying to NRT and need connecting boarding passes, make sure you either have them with you or your itinerary printed (or on a smartphone) before you get to the international connections security checkpoint.
The UA agent in TPE was unable to print my CO BPs, and told me to get them in TPE...I forgot the CO connection counter is after security, and while NRT security agents were beyond friendly, helpful and almost fell over themselves with sorrow at my not having the BPs or a readable itinerary, I couldn't pass through without something to show them. After trying to get on the NRT Wifi system unsuccessfully, I was able to find a copy of my receipt in email and that was enough to get me through. Pre-boarding security was in full swing, and don't be fooled by the unlucky passenger sitting in the chair being checked - they will pull more people and send them to the corner to wait in line, so seeing that person being checked does not mean you will avoid being pulled as well. |
Recent NRT-TPE UA837, my first international trip as a GS. I was about #10 waiting on the Premier Access line to board. The friendly agent had a sign "GLOBAL SERVICES," so I raised my hand and she moved me to the #1 position.
Yup, pulled over for a secondary. Shoes, soles of feet, every nook-'n'-cranny in my carry-ons. By the time I got onto the plane, the rest of the F cabin were already having their PDBs. Next time, I'll stay back in line. |

When I fly TPE-NRT on UA, security is waiting by that boarding lounge too, so it's a problem regardless of your destination when flying a US airline. |

Actually, we can. My understanding is that these gate checks are required because the regular security at those airports doesn't meet TSA requirements: among other things, shoes and belts don't need to be removed at NRT.

Going HKG to GUM, we cleared security, but had a several hour wait due to a flight delay. We picked up a few bottles of water post security for the plane. After they finally started boarding, we walked down the jetway. Just prior to getting on the plane there was a security officer there who went through our bag, confiscating our water bottle. I thought it was odd, since we had already cleared security, but figured it was only done on US bound flights.

If you arrive in Germany from the US, you won't have to go through security before your connecting flight. (There are some exceptions, however, in FRA if you arrive at B or C gates.)
AFAIK there's no restriction on liquid in hand luggage on Japanese domestic flights. |
