Canceling award and booking thru Aeroplan

I just wanted to check to see if there's some downside I'm missing.

I have two SaverPass J tickets booked IAH-HNL (160,000 miles in total). With AC's recent promotion, they are asking 45,000 Aeroplan miles (90,000 total) for the same tickets (which are currently available).

I'm thinking I'll eat the $200 in redeposit fees to get my 160,000 miles back and book the same itinerary thru AC.

Ever since CO ceased to be a transfer partner and Aeroplan started the expanded fuel surcharges on award tickets, I've been feeling less enthusiastic about my existing AMEX points, and this would help me use some of them up and save 70,000 miles for a cost of about $200.

So, is it as much of a no brainer as I think, or am I missing something? I don't think Aeroplan will charge a YQ on the CO flights, and I don't think other fees will be excessive.

Thanks.

Sounds like a good plan. Just make sure the space is there thru AP before you cancel the CO stuff.

how fast does AMEX take to put the points to Aeroplan? You just have to hope Aeroplans computer problems are not fixed, you win.... If you move your points and Aeroplan fixes its computer, you are stuck with miles in the WORST awards program in Star Alliance.

As channa mentioned, book the second ticket before you cancel. When you cancel an award, there is no guarantee those seats will again become available to book.

MR transfers are generally instant. (SPG takes time)

Not even close. (It certainly had a large number of devaluations recently, but it's still better than a good portion of non-us programs)

Oh, absolutely, I'm not going to cancel until I'm ticketed thru Aeroplan.

Thanks, all.

Aeroplan does not charge YQ on CO (amongst others in a quickly dwindling list).

Additional miles (the mileage difference between Y and J, in your case) will be required, should you need to change your reservation after the Aeroplan promo ends.
