Has something changed in upgrade land?

A friend of mine flew from NRT to GUM on a 777 operated by UA. He's Gold on CO and has not created an account on UA. He checked in at NRT to find out that he was not eligible for a complimentary upgrade that he normally would be able to get on the 737 or 767 operated by CO on the same route. The agent at check in said there is no such thing as complimentary upgrades. The flight went out with lots of seats open up front. Any thoughts?

It definitely will be in the new program. There seems to be some confusion currently with the switch to UA metal on the route with most folks reporting no upgrades but every now and then a report that it worked as before.
