Limit on Earning Flex Miles with Presidential Plus CC

I realize there is another thread specifically about the PPlat Card, but the title includes the words "New Look, More Benefits" and this news is neither.

CO/Chase will limit the ability to use the Flex miles or use them indefinitely.

Here is an excerpt from https://www.continental.com/web/en-U...splus/faq.aspx

How do I earn Flex Elite Qualification Miles (Flex EQMs)?

You'll earn 1,000 Flex EQMs for every $5,000 in purchases on your Continental Airlines Presidential Plus Card. Purchases are based on the open date of the Continental Airlines Presidential Plus Card account and not per calendar year. Once $5,000 in charge volume has been made on your Card, 1,000 Flex EQMs will automatically be deposited to your account. Effective Jan. 1, 2012, Flex EQMs will remain in your account during the calendar year in which they were earned, plus three additional calendar years and will then expire if not redeemed.

How do I use my Flex EQMs?

Your Flex EQMs will be displayed on your OnePass account statement and may be redeemed at any time and added to your earned EQM balance to upgrade your Elite status or increase your current EQM balance. Effective Jan. 1, 2012, Flex EQMs can be redeemed to achieve up to Platinum Elite status or the equivalent level in MileagePlus. You may call the OnePass Service Center at 1-713-952-1630 to redeem your Flex EQMs. You have until March 31 to apply these miles to a previous year's balance. For example, a customer earned 70,000 EQMs in 2009, enough to earn Gold Elite status for the 2010 Elite year. That customer has until March 31, 2010, to apply 5,000 Flex EQMs to his 2009 balance to attain Platinum Elite status for 2010.

Bad -
1. Three year expiration after year of earning
2. Max use to increase to Platinum status (can't use to reach 1K)

Good -
1. Don't have to apply flex miles by end of calendar year - can apply miles by March 31st of following year.

Result -
If you project you're going to be flying 75,000 EQM's for the next four years anyway, this benefit now has no use to you.

Thanks.
True, but it's not a "new look" or "more benefit." This is a significant reduction in a key benefit for 75k+ EQM fliers who charge a lot on the card.

I'm also surpised that UA Insider didn't announce the change there, since he started that thread.

Thank you for posting this "new benefit" on a new thread. I wouldn't have read the old one. This is a significant devaluation and, if we really are limited to 5k Flex EQM per year, I will be cancelling my card.

In case anyone cares, the FAQ on Co.com states:

1,000 Flex Elite Qualification Miles (Flex EQMs) for every $5,000 spent up to $25,000

So it looks like we are going to be capped at 5k Flex EQM (which directly conflicts with their statement that you can earn Elite Status by spending on your card). Ill give it a couple of weeks to correct this benefit reduction before I cancel my card. 5k EQM which now expire is not a valuable benefit to me.

So can I add 5000 (or whatever number they allow) to take me to Plat in October but then fly another 25K to take me to 1K?

The "up to $25,000" part which is new is what appears to show a limit of 5000 FEQM per year. It could be a typo, where they meant to say "25,000 miles" which would be enough to jump a level, based on where the parenthetical "up to $25,000" is located...it sure would be nice to get some clarification.

You now earn 1,000 Flex EQMs for every $5,000 spent on your Presidential Plus Card. Flex EQMs can be combined with the EQMs you earn when you fly to help you maintain your Elite status or move up to the next status level (up to $25,000).
If they cap it at 5000 FEQM per year, then it may not be worth it to keep the card...sigh.

Not really sure yet, they clearly have A LOT to fix. Currently, their promo page mentions nothing about the $25k limitation. Also, the Continental page does not indicate the time period in which the $25k limitation is imposed. I called Chase and the representative said she would email me whatever she found out (she wasn't aware of the new terms when I called). If she actually gets back to me, I'll post it here.

If we really are limited to $25k/5k FEQM a YEAR, this card lost a lot of its value to a lot of people.

Indeed....if you spend $25,000 in a year with the $89/year US Airways card, they convert TEN THOUSAND of the miles to Preferred miles. The $375 (or $395) per year CO card might now offer half as many EQMs for spending $25,000? Bonkers!!

Hmm, I may need to look into that card. I am already considering my options. I only run about $50k through a card in a given year, so I was considering the Hilton card to get status with them. I already have it with Continental so the PPlus doesn't help much other than to build up a stockpile of Flex EQM (at least that WAS the case).

Something Doesn't Add Up

Hmmm. Are we thinking this is a new development then? A change from the past Flexible Elite Miles benefit?

I've currently got 41,000 Flexible Elite Miles in my account, earned on this card. (Lots of long haul international travel in business class.) I've never used any of the Flexible Elite Miles, never had to but I'm retiring soon and they will come in handy then!

Continental Airlines Chase Master Card, says Presidential Plus on the front. The words World Elite are on the back.

It is definitely a new development, although I don't think the restrictions are clearly enough spelled out by Chase yet to know for certain what the actual terms will be. Still, if you have the PPlus, I HIGHLY recommend calling Chase and voicing your concern politely.

A $25k cap is pitiful and makes this card a horrible competitor with the AMEX Plat.

Thumbs down

not happy with this. i'm not a heavy spender like others but i was hoping to save up a bunch of FlexEQMs to hit a high level of elite status down the road. Now this won't be possible.

What a gyp...Chase can take their Pplus card and cram it up their ... if that's the new plan. I will be promptly canceling my card if that's going to be the way they reward my loyalty going forward. I'd much rather earn and redeem mr points w/a 20% bonus than deal with the bait-and-switch of the Presidential Plus card. This is so typical Chase...I'll save the extra $395 a year and apply my $200 AMEX credit toward a lounge membership. At least AMEX knows how to treat their cardmembers.

This change makes the card near worthless for me.
